I am considering expanding my fleet and buy the :princess: a HZJ77 , I don't see much on these in MUD everyone has the shorties but the longer 77 is more practical for us.

I will be looking in the 1993-94 range not sure if they were prior to 93.

I like the fact it has a HZ motor,I want one with a 5 spd trans,I don't know much else about these like do they have electric lockers or electric hubs or mannual I assume they are the similar to the 80 series.

The suspension from what I have seen are leafs and not coils at least on the PZ model.
Any feed back on these would be appreciated and Pics especially with bigger tires and suspension lift.

i have a 91 hzj 73 jdm and it come with electric hub, witch i mod for manual one ,pretty humid in quebec,2 open diff, sadly, put a old men emu 2.5 inch heavy duty, very satisfied,4 leaf spring, run 31 good year in winter and 33 bf mt km2 in summer.you should get 70 serie, just love it.i also own a bj 42 1982.try to send pic of my hzj lifted.the 5 speed is great, pull my 1 ton 20 feet long easy.dont be shy if you got question, always good to help fellow cruiserhead.sorry, bad english,im frenchie

give me a few years. i will replace my 81 with a 77.
The 1hz is a nice engine, very smooth. Coil spring front started in 99.
But when did they change it to a 76 or whatever they are called now?
I am out of the loop on what the new ones are called.

a 77 with a heavy ome kit, 255s, factory lockers, 5 speed, winch, arb, roof rack.
it will happen.

These are the same as any other 1HZ powered 7* series and should have mechanically activated lockers for the year. I think they went electric when they went to coil fronts in 99

I think they were a 76 series when they 1st arrived and had leaf springs, when they got coils in 99 or thereabouts ,they became a 77.
When the new body shape came along in 2006 they reverted to being a 76 series again.
The 7* series range has used all the numerals from 70 to 79 but dont ask me what a 72 series looks like;)

HZJ77

My 1990 HZJ77 had electric push-button hubs - since changed to manual locking hubs - and electric diff licks front and rear. It is handy to have the 2 extra doors and the 1HZ is a nice smooth diesel.

My favorite out of all 8 cruisers i have owned. The 77 is the perfect wagon in my opinion....70's style....with four doors! The PZ lacks a little power, however still a great engine. I would have loved to be able to find a 77 with a HZ but they are hard to find(in Canada).

they are still tricky to find in japan in good condition.
81s are more popular because they are cushy.

you know worst comes to worst. You could get your exporter to start looking for you. And even if you have to wait a few months to import it get him to store it in japan. I know my exporter has his own yard and its free...

not sire on the years of the but the have 6 wheel nuts and leaf front end so anywere up to 99
most of the ones i find pics of that are from japan ,they put the chrome post oct 99 front grill and blinkers on

I wonder why the 77 never came with the option of 3rd row seating, like the Prado has? From the windshield back there the same beast (less the axel SF/FF), and would be better suited for the load from the extra bodys.

I own a Prado with a transplanted 1hz into it (hzj78/77), took a little work but freed myself from the grips of the 2LTE. like said earlier "70's style and 4 doors", great vehicle for a family that uses it as a DD and a weekend getaway vehicle. With the 4 doors I think this vehicle attracts people that want a multi use Cruiser, so you don't see to many jacked up, though I'm always chomping at the bit to make it a bit more mean.

I think they had leafs on all 4 corners till 99, then coils up front after that.

sorry 22K OBO
Took it to Alaska last summer

I love the HZJ77s and have active searches going on for them right now. They are very hard to find, and even harder to find in 5 speed with the cool options.

I have one at the shop that is an auto with factory lockers, OME lift, OME winch bar, 255 85 R16 BFGs - totally amazing looking, but a little too spendy for me at $30,000 asking price.

The turbo makes these things haul!
