I am seriously considering purchasing one of the above and would like to get opinions on which is better.
Engine?......3.4T or 4.2?
suspension differences?
is the auto tranny in the 74 the 'bulletproof' one or might it cause me grief?
is the 73 a 24V system of 12? the 24V system scares me for some reason.
thanks for any help i might get!
Pete

I don't know why this got moved here but I'll give you my thoughts.

The auto is the same in either and will outlast a couple of clutches and the fifth gear of the five speed. You should choose based on preference and not durability.

The 13bt is likely marginally more durable than the 1hz and then only because of the in line pump. The turbo is a liability though. The six makes similar power without one.

The HZJ 73 has bigger birfields and a smaller ring gear. Pro and con. It also has coils in the front which make it work better.

12 or 24 volts is generally market dependent and both have their benefits. Nothing to be afraid of.

IS summery, drive them both. see which one you like more. You can't go wrong.

.
HZJ73 is leaf sprung and the HZJ74 is the coil sprung. The HZJ71 is the coil sprung 70 version

Unlike the earlier models ,a jump up in numbers denotes a suspension change from leaf to coil rather than the turbo option

Turbo models are now known by the engine prefix of HDJ**;)

I would get the 1HZ because it has wider, smoother power band.

Me neither. Should be in the 7* series section if anything.

Other then that, agree with most of what has been said.

I figure an HZJ73 with BJ74 cable locking axles, and a 1HD-T would be a sweet ride.

Back to your question...

HZJ73's seem to be much easier to find then the BJ74's right now, so that may be a consideration.

As Bruce said: "In summery, drive them both. see which one you like more. You can't go wrong."

oh give it up, there are plenty of threads in the 70 series section that should be here including the race photos thread. no tech there but it is still sitting there. i would be willing to trade you that thread for this one...

this info has been covered a few times now, a search should have been made.

Haven Driven both I like the HZJ73 much better with caveats. I like the cable lockers on teh bj74 better as well as the bigger front end. The engine is the best part on the HZJ73 - it is smooth and has lots of power -as well as power potential with the addition of the turbo.

All in all my vote is for the HZJ73.

Regards,

Seconded. Having driven both, the engine in the HZ73 is smooth and powerful, and puts the BJ74 to shame. Its a lovely little engine it is.

after beating some of the post 1990 models now i can say i like the newer rigs better than the older ones but the large front diff is nice to have...
the HZ is quieter, more poerful and b etter on fuel than the older 13BT...
cheers

i pot a pzj70 and a hzj73 come next month i know all bout the hzj but not the 1pz any help out there?

i am wheeling a PZJ70 right now and have been for about a year. i turbo'd it way back and never regrettied it. i have driven the HZ for a few years now and that is a nice engien as well, they are quite comparable. the turbo PZ is faster and stronger than the NA HZ but turbo the HZ and it kicks anything Toyota's ass...
you bought 2 trucks you know nothing about?!?

you can only read so much, then buy! i own a 1989 bj73 1984 bj60 1997 tacco
1991 hdj 81. i was also bidding on the fj75 but stop at 300000yen lol

You will find just about everything you need at either ENS or G and S in BC. You can get the engine manual at ENS - i'd get that if you dont already have it.

You like JDM's! That's awsome.

I was going to go for the FJ75, but not too fancy on gassers at this point. And, I see fire trucks just about everyday - not really into them that much when you drive one all the time:)

Regards,

yes i got the manuals
g and s ? do you have a link?
i was going to do a engine swap on the fj75

Go up to the number 4 post on this thread, and in Greg's sig line is the link.
Cheers,
Deny
