I'm thinking about doing hydro assist steering on my Cruiser with a PSC box. I'm running an FJ40 front axle with the ARP knuckle studs. Will the knuckles/studs hold up to the added force of the ram?

do it..

I run this on my 76 with stock knuckles and I'm rolling on 35's.

D'animal, has that ram distorted the cover at all? I put a nice ding in mine at tellico, im suprised it holds up to the force of that ram.

The down side of hydraulic assist is you will go through steering links until you beef them up. I was against a rock one time and turn the wheel. No resistance at all. The steering link looked like a pretzle.

I left the stock tie rod ends in place. They are my week link. They are an easy trail fix adn i carry spares.

The dif cover is not distorted at all.

The difference is that he is still using his stock arms.

Going to hysteer adds a ton of extra leverage. And that is when the knuckles start to fail. Have you heard of anyone breaking a knuckle without hysteer??

Bob is going to stay SU so no hysteer arms, and if I find a kickin deal on a hydro cylinder it will have hydro assist as well.

good point Mace, but Large stud knuckles are easy to come by, especially with people upgrading to the 6 studs..

Hy jack - on another Hydro assist topic, Anyone run ATF with Hydro??? I blew up my steering in moab, and all we had was atf, so now its filled with that.. seems to work fine with regular PS, but what type of fluid should i run when i add the assist?

works with both..

ATF and PS fluid are very similar.. Plus you get that added 20 hp cause it is pink :flipoff2:

Some companies actually recomend that you use ATF in your PS system. It really depends on who made the system.

ATF has additional cleansing agents in it. If you have leaky seals it can do a good job of potentialy increasing the leaks.

In a pinch it works great.

It is not a one size fits all answer. Longevity might be reduced with ATF or PS fluid depending on a lot of variables.

Personaly, I seem to replace enough crap often enough that the fluid is a big non issue..

would it help to run synthetis with a ram to reduce heat?
