Pretty cool to think about those with solar and battery storage like the Powerwall could be insulated from blackouts and also charge their vehicles. Which often happen to be the fastest, safest, most efficient, and advanced cars on the planet. That’s true energy independence on a personal level!
You can always go down the street to the other side of town or the next town over to get gas. Can you do that in an electric? With electric charging stations far in between and with your home in a blackout, what are you gonna do?
Have you priced out a power wall? Our Generac contractor who is licensed to install powerwalls said he’s only installed one for a family in town. Granted, our energy costs are really cheap compared to places like CA,NY,CO,AZ, etc., so it doesn’t really make financial sense to do it here. The cost I received for two powerwalls installed was $28k, not including the $4500 for the whole house gentec that I had installed recently or going the even more expensive route of solar. If I lived in an area where blackouts happened often, I would probably do it but my natural gas gentec will run the entire house so long as the NG is flowing and if that stopped flowing, well“Houston we are under attack”.

How’s the maintenance on those Gentec? What is the annual cost of maintaining it?
I have the 24kw and my wife just reminded me it was $9500(as she rolls her eyes at me)
This is what happens when you’re not in charge of the bills. 
I haven’t had to maintain it yet as it was installed a couple months ago. We only had one power outage because of a wind storm. We both work from home and it was a must because of it. She’s a Radiologist and can’t have any interruptions, so with UPS backups and the new gentec, we had zero power loss, just noticed a 10sec power delay with the lights and appliances. Having multiple UPS backups on tv and workstations saw zero interruptions.The yearly cost however is up to you really. Most people can easily maintain them and just buy the maintenance kit that includes (lube filter, air filter and plugs). No need to pay someone to do it. The installer literally teaches you exactly how to maintain it otherwise it’s around $250-400 per year for maintenance service.

Good point! That’s another big downfall of charging stations. This is another reason you can’t just flip the switch from gas powered vehicles to all electric. EV is excellent as a dd and charge at home solution. The problem begins when road tripping. For instance, we drive down to Destin beach every Spring and Fall from Knoxville and the last thing we want to do is wait an hour or longer to charge an EV. That takes away from beach time and beating the traffic!
Also, the family would be really annoyed having to sit around waiting for it to be fully charged. Not worth it!
So true! If you’ve ever walked through a wind farm, you’ll find dead birds, hawks as well which is really unfortunate to see. It honestly surprised me because the blades look like they are moving real slow from a distance but not when you’re directly under one.
Not to mention the oil sludge leaking out onto the ground from the yaw drive and rotor. Let us not forget that don't even come close to lasting long enough to have a full ROI without the 50-75% subsidies on them. Most farms only run 30-40% of the time as it is which would make that ROI closer to 50 years before they've paid for themselves. It's a joke. The diesel generators that run some of the EV charging stations make me laugh as well.

True but I can refill at every corner of a city. And it takes 5 min.
Not moral. Just more practical.
Once you come out of your comfort zone, you'll understand why people are clamoring for EVs.
How about almost never having to go out of your way to get gas. Or rushing to fill and make an appointment. Pig owners know the drill well. Nevermind that EVs leave pigs in the dust in so many other metrics.
Hopefully the new fangled EVs may have real off-road chops. And reserve to do heavy duty work.

Brother has Model Y. And i get report from him all the time with his ownership experience. No doubt that they are amazing...within their limits. As a daily driver or even sports car role, they are great! Yeah, for city driving, pig owners cannot match an EV that has been charging overnight.
But, to be honest, anytime that i know that i have something important to do tomorrow, then i just fill up the pig the day before (the same way that you remember to charge your EV the night before).
But did you know that their claimed 0-60 times etc are only when battery is full? If battery drops below 30-40% i think, there is throttling and your performance becomes more pigglet.
My brother went from Austin to Crystal Beach (near Galveston) for our holiday get-to-gether in a beach house. Guess what? Crystal beach has no charging station at all. So, he had to stop in Galveston to charge. He needed to charge 3-4 times...and each time, we had to wait at least 30 min to get any reasonable range. On one of them, we had to wait 50 min because it was one of those destination chargers. Mind you, all of us had to wait for him or run around grabbing food while he waits in his Y...granted he had Youtube in car to entertain him.
And he wanted to drive on the beach for mild off-roading...but was afraid since he was far away from Galveston charging station, he abandoned off-roading with us...and headed back to beach house while the rest of us continued on the beach. That sucks!
Oh, and if you carry more folks and run AC on a hot day...your range drop like a rock...at times, my brother could barely break 200 miles!
Sure, at least on my mostly stock LC, i could only get 320 miles...which is not great but hey, i can fill up instantly under 5 minutes ANYWHERE and be back on the road.
As for leaving pigs in the dust...sure...when battery is full....

Personally I'm waiting for the industry to be able to produce real world, verifiable mileage data. Only competition can encourage this so let the games begin. I don't need or want sub 3 second 0-60 times, 4- 500 road miles and 250-300 off road would get me on the EV bandwagon. Price? that's a whole different issue too.
Yo, anyone claiming to be a greeny is an absolute hypocrite if they own a 200 or similar based on assumptions that EV is better for the environment and oil is bad. You can buy an electric suv right now. If a greeny says they need something capable for off-road and can’t wait for an electric off-road suv, well now they are damaging the environment by driving on it in the first place. I look forward to more EV to outpace the annoying loud mustangs, chargers, etc.

Real world range is definitely the drawback for EV’s. I am encouraged by the new Hummer to be honest. Can’t wait to see how that plays out in real world testing
LOL Mad. You can continue to get your critical judgement 2nd hand. I'm already multiple EVs in, going on 10 yrs now. It's a gamechanger.
Sure, they have their limitations too, but with each passing generation and infrastructure additions, it's fading fast. Like the pig I own in the garage, I can plan ahead and around specifics. Actually, what I truly enjoy is that they work around me more than I have to work around it. Fuel runs no more. Maintenance is practically nil next to onerous oil, fluid, and complex ICE mechanicals. SMOG check, what's that? Performance and self driving, good lord you have no idea what you're missing.
I'm not ready to say they can replace my beloved pig. But they sure as well are on their way with some seriously interesting capabilities and additional competencies on the horizon. That's what this thread is about. The possibilities.
Will they measure up to the established Land Cruiser 300-series? Or perhaps the right question is will the 300-series measure up to them?

Not a greeny and will be the first to admit I've done very little research into ICE vs EV 'green' comparisons, but I've read many, many times that the most eco-friendly option is to keep driving the ICE car you already have. If your ICE rust bucket is falling apart and going to the dump in any case, then buying an EV may be the green option. But if your ICE vehicle is going strong, making a new EV purchase is overall worse for the environment.

Joking aside until there is a better charging solution I can't see going full electric. We take drives with some regularity that are 16+ hours. Until there is a way to not add days to the trip I don't see owning electric but that is specific to my situation. I like the idea and some of the specs except the range issue.
Also I have heard how much the range goes away in the winter when you actually have to use the heat as well. Some of the folks I work with really have struggled with that in our Maine winters.
