My 88 FJ62 has lots of leaks in the trany, tcase, engine, and radiator. Here is my list of things to buy. Please let me know what you think I'm missing.

Rear Main Seal
Transfer Case seals and gaskets
Transmission rebuild kit (gaskets and seals.)
Header Gasket
Starter Contacts and Plunger
Oil Pan Gasket
Valve Cover Gasket
Front Pinion Seal
all new belts
radiator

Here is my optional list that I haven't decided on:
new vacuum lines (old ones ok...)
tcase gears while im in there
tcase and trany mounts (while there taken out)

Here's my symptoms: Lots of leaks in the drivetrain and engine. My radiator is corroded out the bottom and I don't want to refurbish it. After the truck is in 4wd and taken out, while in the driveway I see the front pinion seal leaking where the driveshaft meets the differential pumpkin. I took apart my starter and the contacts and plunger are worn.

The whole truck is operational but leaves puddles everywhere. This is why the P.O. sold it to me. It has 280,000 miles with a new alt, new water pump, new thermostat and housing, new radiator hoses, new exhaust, and the lower 4WD VSV is burnt out so I'm looking for a cheap replacement next time I go to the junkyard. I will post pics when I can to help.

You'll need some speedy sleeves ($40+ each), you may as well put in a McNamara gear ($300 for the gear) if you haven't. And I will caution you not to rebuild the transmission yourself there are threads on that.

The list will be extensive once you start opening it up and seeing every little part.

The transmission was rebuilt 50,000 mi ago. I was hoping to replace only the seals. I wouldn't attempt a trany rebuild, that's a bit much for me.

The McNamara gear looks like a good fix. My trany has the clank when going from Park to Drive or reverse. Looks like I'll be going that route...

Thanks for the link, good info.

If you do the McNamara gear, do you also need to do the speedy sleaves, or have I completely misunderstood the McNamara gear. Sorry for the hijack.

Just for starters, the side cover gasket. On the rest there are too many variables to address it all. You are all over the place on the leaks and parts. Try breaking it down into sections so we can point you in the right direction.

Coupla notes; the TC gears are probably fine. The McGear is required if the input shaft/gear is worn. Speedy sleeves may be needed for the TC output shafts if they are scored. If you are dropping the tranny you will need the exhaust Y pipe donuts. It goes on and on...

This is already a 3FE party. Everyone that has responded is on the 3FE list!

My read on your 'gaskets and seals' item for the trans is that much of the task of rebuilding a trans is gaskets and seals. Perhaps you are referring to any external seals that are causing your leaks instead of internal stuff?

Delete the above recommended trans filter, as they can be cleaned in less than 2 minutes, and reused ad nauseum.

As the d-shafts will be off, then how about new u-joints?

Split the fan shroud in half for easier work in the area later. On the same note, how old does the fan clutch look?

Trans oil cooler.

Along with new belts=new idler pulley, or at least the bearing if it's available for the 62.

Might as well go ahead and buy the filter kit cause you will need both seals .....well one is the pan gasket and the other is a little round one for the filter

Carquest has kits w/ filter and w/o, and w/o is cheaper so neener neener :p.

:lol:I will have to remember that cause every time time i go to get one they tell me you gotz to buy the whole kit:mad:.
Uh, Crazy...I was a little bit wrong about my info. I went by verbal info from 2+ yrs ago. The 2 kits are filter, or filter and pan gasket.:o

I guess my neener neener is only a neener, now.

My trany clanks when going into drive or reverse from park. Sometimes it doesn't if it's under load. Looks like I have a lot of research ahead of me. I joined the 3FE yahoo groups and I'm working my way through that material. I'll post again once I get a better detailed list done. Looks like it's gonna be a long one. THANKS! Love the back up from you guys. Makes me feel like I can do a lot more since everyone is educated about my exact problems. :)

Randy,

I do not know your particular position regarding how much you value your time or money but if its a big overhaul or change out change out items if they may fail over a short period of time.
In the aviation world its called a Time Change Item. If its likely to fail in X amount of time it probably will and if its cheap, why worry about the potential just change it anyway.
In your case is a matter of time, inconvenience and money if it does fail at the worst time while on a expedition or traveling in a area not know for cruiser parts.

Best of luck :)

Haryv,
I agree with your opinion. I work in aerospace and I am familiar with what you are referring to. I am researching the McNamara Gear and pricing it out. He quoted me a little over $400 for the gear shipped from Austrailia and the rest of the seals and repairs while in the transfer case to access everything runs another $400. So far it looks like $800 to fix the clunk and make the trany and tcase reliable.
