after seeing the LJ71 perform this past weekend i decided it needs a locker in the rear. i have a perfectly good elec locker out of the front of a 81 and i am thinking of sticking it in the rear of the 71 using the gears from the 71 rear diff.
now something is screaming in my ear, it can not be done. i am missing something.

can someone set me straight on this?
cheers

Seems to me the helix of the gears will be based on the pinion location. IE you can't run high pinion gearsets in a low pinion housing. You need an e-locker setup from a Tacoma or 4runner or tundra. Maybe you should get an Aussie for the back and put that e-locker in the front.

I think it can be done with some housing mods, but I wouldn't do it. These fast-turning gears seem a bit weak to start with, at least I've seen quite a few of them with broken teeth and the like, sometime by the lack of maintenance and shot bearings, sometimes just plain failure.

The LSD helps but is no miracle indeed...
A locking LSD would be cool :D

denis,
the center units front and rear have the same ring size... how do you install larger gears?

yah, i do want to install something in the rear but i have no money left...
i guess i will install this into the front of the PZ and the other elec full size in the rear of the PZ...
what to do...

Wayne, I don't think you can install larger rings. The issue is that with the HP, reverse cut front in the rear you'll be running on the sloped side of the gears, which is not ideal for durability and strength, and given the fact that the original setup is not bulletproof from the start, it may not live long. I'm not saying it will fail, but I wouldn't do it if it was me. I think the high ratio combined with the small number of teeth of 39/8 does not help either.
In a part of my head I'm fantazying about a LC9" / LJ hybrid rear axle for a racing truck, I might actually do it one day :D

On the LJ I'll probably go with a KZJ95 electric locker in the rear :grinpimp: and an HDJ80 electric locker in the front -which I already have as well.

Many folks tried to run the high pinion units in the rear of mini trucks... they simply don't hold up.

yep tha's it ..

But why not open and go to saving money status, until you get all enought money to buy an ARB :D

because i am cheap and a bush rig should be cheap to build. i might go with an aussi locker or i might even leave it open...
ARB doesn't turn my crank at all...
cheers

You could source a limited slip from a Supra.... I've purchase more than a few over the years for way under $100USD. The clutch pack type 4 pin/V6 style came in the 86.5 - 92, easy to shim the preload spring for more bite. LMK if this interests you, I'll give you more info.

Wayne,

You do not want to put the revers cut (high pinion) gear set in the rear the load side (strength) of the gears would be setup for reverse not forward, and would be weakest with most of your driving.

Cheers,

Michael

Wayne,

I can't believe you are even considering a rear locker, what did you get spoiled

Michael

i have run lockers for years, usually just a lincon locker or a lock-rite but i have a used one sitting here so i thought i would see if i could use it...
cheers

Anyone found an aftermarket E-locker kit for KZJ95. From my readings it looks like it could be the same kit as a 3rd gen 4runner/tacoma. Trying to verify
