How'd the new brake master cylinder fit?

I'm gearing up for a disc brake swap on my 1970 FJ40.

If I use a spacer/adapter against the firewall and then a booster and new master on that, it sure looks like it'll conflict with the carburetor.

Did you have a problem with this? If so, how'd you solve it?

Pictures would sure be a help to me, so please post up pics of your installation.

Thanks.

Mine didn't conflict BUT I;ve got a single barrel carb with about an inch between the carb and master cyl. I was wondering the same thing when I change carbs.

I got the adapter from Man-A-Fre and a booster/MC from a '91 toyota pickup off Ebay. I had to drill new holes into the adapter to make it work and then it didn't fit - carb in the way as well as clutch master. So I went and took one off an '82 Toyota pickup in Pull-A-Part Salvage yard that was smaller. Fit into the same holes I drilled so wouldn't have fit the adapter otherwise but fit nicely into the space available. Don't know if it works yet and I still have to modify the pushrod to get it to reach the brake pedal. Here's the first booster and then the second.

Thanks.

Do any other mudders have a pic or two that you could post showing how all of this fit when you modified your '40?

I appreciate it.

Kind of a revival of an old thread.

I bought the JT Outfitters adapter. It is 3.25" long. It provides a way to mount the later booster spaced 3.25" off the firewall, just clearing the firewall rib. I think other manufacturer's adapters are identical, or very similar.

I looked at the adpater and the available space between the firewall and the carb. Man, there ain't much room in there! I am still looking for pics of some more installs with these adapters. Top view and front view especially.

Got any?

The only application I've seen with that adapter/booster has been in V8 conversions where carb interference is not an issue. Did not know about the 1bbl not having a problem. The only time I have seen a booster added to the old firewall rib has been where they cut the rib and fit the booster flush against the firewall. Even then, the booster may interfere with the clutch master, unless you can find a really small booster.:bang:

Thanks, Degnol.

I spoke to a guy at JTO and he said that the early minitruck booster and master will fit with their adapter. Their website says this, too:

Toyota Early FJ40 45 Land Cruiser Brake Booster Adapter - JTOutfitters

I guess where I am at is in a state of disbelief after really looking at the available space! That's why I'm looking for some pics.

It may be that I will have to tear it down and then go do some trial and error, but I am hoping that someone has a setup similar to what I am trying to do.

I too have only seen them work with V8's (That is the setup I have). Does not sound like it would help, but I think can give you pictures of that. I got my spacer from Wardens.
