How to remove roof rib glue?

I've peeled one of the rib backers off and that goop just doesn't want to come off! I've tried some kind of "goop remover" stuff with acetone and some other solvents in it, but that is just barely better than nothing.

Any tricks or magic potion to get this gunk off???

I'm going to Line-X it... And yes I plan to sand it, but when you sand this glue, it sort of rolls/gobs up and turns into a mess - it doesn't just sand away. It would be a lot easier to get most of the goop off prior to sanding.

Actually, it's stuck so good that when I peeled off the rubber rib backer, it tore chunks out of the backer and left some of that stuck to the roof.

"goo gone" is a brand name one that I used just yesterday on paper labels stuck to a metal filing cabinet.

Beware(?) it can damage the paint-but it does not sound to me like you are concerned about that.

Also, supposedly WD-40 left to soak can do the same. again beware of paint damage

I used a heat gun and a plastic putty knife. It worked but it still took a while.

Body shop techs have a big rubber wheel (about 4" in diameter) that goes on the end of a air tool, that they use to get double sided tape and other stickers (pin stripes,etc) off of vehicles. I borrowed one of these and used it. PM me if you have any question on how to use it, there is a certain technique that works best, kinda med. pressure and med/slow speed. I think the rubber wheel is made by 3M.

I just ordered some 3M Adhesive Remover and I think I saw the "eraser" thing at that website - looked like a white rubber disc thingamjig... I didn't order it, though I might end up wishing I had.

With a little luck, the chemical stuff, sandpaper, and elbow grease, I'll get it cleaned up enough to Line-X over.

Gawd, I wish Toyota would have sold nice clean simple 80's here like they did in the rest of the world! No flares, no rack, no ribs, barn doors, hand-crank windows, etc.... Sometimes I wonder if it would've been cheaper/easier in the long run to just import a Cruiser from Oz.

I used the rubber "eraser" wheel as mentioned above, using a cordless electric drill. It worked great.

Get the wheel. Used one before and works like a champ. Take s the adhesive and leaves the paint.

Would you care to expand on this thread on your technique? Seems like the perfect thread to do so.

My only 2 cents is that with the rubber wheels, if held in one place or with too much pressure the paint WILL BUBBLE! Don't ask how I know...

Update: Borrowed a rectangular shaped "trowel" thingamajig and used it to shave the goo right off. Scratched the paint some, but it worked a lot better than a putty knife or the Goo-Gone stuff, and I'm sanding and Line-Xing the whole roof anyway. Ended up taking me about 30 min to do the first rib's goo and about 45 minutes total to do the rest of them after I figured out the "slicing" technique and quit worrying about scratching the paint.

Also in case anybody's interested, I couldn't pull the nutserts out, so I cut them off flush with a chisel. Patched the holes with Devcon Plastic Steel Putty, which is a LOT easier to work with than JB Weld and I'm 99.9% sure it's a lot tougher.

The metal underneath the roof rack feet usually has some rust developing. Also, the stock roof rack is fairly useless with heavy items (e.g. boats, bikes, tires, etc.). I prefer the cleaner look, as well.

I'm with you on this. I have a guy in Australia looking to ship me a set of barn doors with the latches and hinges. I'll let you know how it works out. I'm thinking about buying a body, taking my time making it ossie spec then swapping it over. I'm also thinking about dune beige as the color. We'll see.

FWIW, took my OE rack off yesterday. -No glue residue! Big a$$ holes from the nutserts though
