I bumped into someone local to myself who drives an HJ60, claiming it was a Japanese import which has been converted from (thanks SizzleChest) right hand drive.

I have owned my '83 BJ60 for 9 years and have not too many dealings with HJ60s (all I know is that they pass me, because a 3B with 37s is limited har, har). The only imports (LandCruisers) I've seen from Japan are swank high roof, intercooled turbo'd 6 cyl with every option under the sun (you know the ones I'm talking about), so I suppose I am a little perplexed as to why someone would bring in an HJ60 which is common to Canada, apart from the obvious of low milage and rust free but the vehicle I saw was covered in primer.

I suppose my question is this...

How does one recognize a Japanese import HJ60?
Is there a country code on the door jam plaque?

Thanks for your input.

Well, technically speaking, were not all cruisers built in Japan?
So I guess at some point his truck came over on a boat from Japan.
Also, I wonder why someone would convert a LHD to RHD when they drive it in North America?

If his truck was indeed a Japanese import in the sense of which you an I mean (originally sold in Japan) I wonder why someone would do the import work, on a non loaded clean truck?

Cheers,
Nick

I've noticed that even the basic JDM rigs have more soundproofing. Sometimes there is a mat on the firewall and the fender tops. That and shag rug.

Does anybody know if they used a rotary pump on the JDM 2H? I've never seen a JDM 3B without one. That'd identify it immediately.

Full floaters, Factory winches, step bumpers, sliding rear windows, Power window/doorlocks would all be clues as well.

if it is covered with primer then i would have to guess it is a CDM passing itself off as a JDM... how many km? ask him what it cost to do the RHD to LHD swap that should give it away. what is the underchassis look like?
cheers
