How would I mount one o those harbor freight winches onto my fj40? The big issue is that I have aftermarket power steering on the support structure for the front bumper. Is there any hope or is there's different brand that would work?

You need to modify your bumper, or better, install a proper winch bumper.

No one is going to tell you that the harbor freight winch is worth bothering with.

I have a Warn 8274 installed between my Saginaw box and the other side. It fits fine. The mount is custom and it may be 1" offset to the other side. I don't remember right off hand.

Eddy, is that also true of the new line of HF winches?

Check out THIS THREAD and THIS THREAD in the Winching and Recovery Section!

To the OP, you need to buy a bumper or fab a bracket that will accommodate your winch. If it's bottom mounted then that may be problematic with the Saginaw steering box on your front frame horn, if it is front mounted with dimensions similar to an 8274 then you should have no problem finding bumpers and mounting plates to make it work. But since HF winches aren't popular, it's probably time to find a fabricator and figure it out.

This is from one of the linked threads. Woody wheels a crapload more than I do, so what do I know?

The Badlands is a new series for Harbor Freight, and yes, they hired an engineer from MileMarker to design them.

I've got a 12k on the front of my 80 right now, one of the early versions. ... I've been impressed with it...especially for the price.

When I spoke with HF, they were well aware of their 'crappy tool' persona, and this is one of the items the intend to alleviate that impression.

Simple solution is get the winch channel at HF since you will already be there getting the winch and if you have fab skills, fab up a riser for the channel. If no skills (like me), have someone do it for you. These pictures were taken while I still had the double tube bumper on. I have since removed it and replaced it with a stock bumper. I did not have to remove anything other than the bumper to swap them.

Not sure how thick he made the risers but I will tell you that they mount through the frame with 3 Grade 8 bolts on each side. I have pulled with that winch from every angle I can think of and it has NEVER let me down.

BTW, the universal winch channel is too long to fit in the FJ's frame rails. I cut it on both ends to make it fit. ;)

Correct me if I am wrong guys but most(8-10Klb winches), if not all, winches have the same bolt pattern, so whether you get a cheap0 or a warn or what not, you need a strong base to mount it too that has that bolt pattern, like JADCruiser added to his '68 (very nice BTW) My '68 has an aftermarket bumper (which I just recently found out is from Man-A-Fre)

here is a picture of mine:

Here is the listing at Man-A-Free:

MAF 4+Plus Capped Planetary Winch Bumper

As long as you find a way to bolt it securely, mine sets above the frame rails and that way it will fit a larger winch if needed but my 8K smittybilt fits just fine! Not that I am promoting this bumper, it came with my FJ from the PO; however, I have always liked shorties on jeeps......but JADCruiser's stock fitment is Perfect!!!!!!

not to keep rambling, but the reason I bolted on my winch then took it off is because it does set so high, imagine looking at mine on that bumper, it sets pretty high and ruins that classic cruiser look, as apposed to JAD's which is snuggled in between the frame rails really nice and lets you see that bezel (which on mine was upside down at the time of that shot :-/ lol)

your 68 looks very good !!!!

Good to know about the quality of the HF new winches. I was thinking it might be an alternative if cash flow was an issue.
