Question to the masses… I’ve built swing outs that work in tandem with the ambulance doors on my 73 series. Even though the spindles are carrying all the weight of the door—- if I park facing downhill — gravity is pushing the door to close with this additional weight. Basically, the limiters don’t have enough force to hold the door open. Has anyone figured out a way to keep the doors open? Specifically wondering about making something to go over the door limiter to keep it open? Or has someone found a better option?

Cheap easy way, slot a piece of PVC to put over the limiter :meh:

That is the same style of swing out set up on the Cruiser Outfitters bumper.

Yes, blend of Cruiser Outfitters (made by expedition one) and the OZ version. Does Cruiser Outfitters give you a solution to the door staying open?

I quit using the kaymar swing outs but I recall the mechanism has a feature that prevents this from happening (falling back towards the bumper). It locks into place when the "swing out" is swung out fully and you have to lift it before you put the "swing out" back into closed position.

I was trying to recall, it has been a long time since I have seen one but I don’t recall the door closing being an issue.

Also, I am curious if a new/less worn limiter wouldn’t fix it. It doesn’t appear you have added much more additional weight and mine (standard tire carrier) holds really well with a 33” tire and steel wheel.

Looks like nice work, I really like the CO/EX1 design, as a rule I don’t like swing outs due to the additional steps needed for access.

Can you add pull pins to the swing outs that would sink into the bumper?

My Kaymar opens wider than 90 degrees, and that plus the little gas shock/strut keep it open. I'm sure if I was parked sideways on a hill it would be inadequate but that can be avoided.

Since it's your own design, the pull pins as described above might be the simplest and strongest solution.

Good idea; however, I really don't want an additional step 100% of the time, if I only need a solution for 5% of the time.

I think I will order new door limiters and see if that helps. If not, something that goes over the limiter ( a pipe) or 3d printed wedge might fit the bill.

You’re in Kansas, it’s not like it’s hard to park nose up

My luck, only one side is available of those rear door limiters.... wonder if they would work for either side??

they make metal brackets that drop over the door hinge to keep it open, but i really dont like that idea.

the pull pin doesnt have to be 100% of the time, they make some with detents that will stay open with a twist

of course you could also just add a support strut to the swingout and that would keep it open but not be a "lock" to need to manupulate at all.

I went back to look at the carrier add-ons of my kaymar bumper since I have them removed and in the garage at the moment. The gas struts provided with them is plenty strong and yes it is wider than 90 degrees.
