My 76 which you guys have seen pics of it worth way more than what my insurance would be willing to pay if it were stolen or wrecked. Where have you guys insured your rigs so they will be insured for the proper amount?
This has been discussed several times, in this forum and in chat. Do a search. Basically, you can do a declared value with several insurance companies, if you get an independent appraisal.
Small world! He appraised my 1969 VW convertible and my unimog. I just took some good pics and a description and he took care of it. I gave his appraisal to my insurance company (american family) and it was covered and the payments are cheap cause it's collector insurance.
I got my fj apparaied and the insurance agent told me it would be that value, which is good, 1000 more than i paid. also my monthy payment went down from my dodge truck
Use the appraisaor the Tommy (TJDIV)gave you and then use that to get a qoute with diff insurance companies. For exampel, my FJ40 is with Liberty Mutual and for $425 a year its covered for Liability and Theft for a $13,000 value. I did not insure it for collision.
When I spoke with Hagerty, they asked about any mods that were done. I mentioned "fiberglass seats" and larger tires (31x10.5) and they said they would not insure. At least they did not waste my time. I do now have agreed value insurace.
Allstate:
This is what I do without an appraisal:
I have regular full coverage on the rig..........with whatever value I tell them, sure the price goes up with that value.
I can drop the collision on the truck when Im not driving it by simply leaving a phone message at the underwriters office...
when I want to drive the car simply call, leave a messgage to add collision for that day/weekend/month whatever.....I have a reminder on the dash.....
90% of the time, she does not add the collision or the cost, if something were to happen I am covered with that message left.
When collision is canceled, theft/tree falls on it/meteor strike etc....It is covered for the said value.......mine being 22K
No millage restrictions, locked garage, to and from car shows etc....like hagerty.
Very cheap way to go if your not DD'ing the rig. extremely cheap.
"American Collectors Insurance" is who I insure my vintage Porsche's thorough. I had Progressive originally, however after the first time I tried to file a claim they instantly wanted to total the car. Became a huge nightmare to reverse the adjustment decision, I had to take it to arbitration to get it resolved.
American Collectors will cover modified, in fact the website quote calculator has a selection specifically for "modified"
Go to vintageoffroad.com, get a "professional appraisal" for $250 from Greg and then get a state value policy. Just kiding don't mess with the asshat on that site.
Anyway, good luck. I am glad I sold my cherry 55, now I got my rig covered with liability only. I keep it in my garage, in sight and will but a hidden starter switch on it soon. If it gets taken I am screwed but not many people will steal a muddy truck
