Ok, so this is probably a stupid question. I plan to go on road trip and sleep in the car. Being in the car with the smart key would basically enable anyone to unlock the car by just touching the handle. How can I disable smart key while I am sleeping in the car?

Thanks

It actually should be smart enough to know the key is inside not outside and shouldn’t unlock. But just in case, just order a faraday pouch on Amazon. One of these will reliably block the signal once it is closed up and the key won’t work inside or outside.

The same thing is an effective way to avoid car theft via relay attack if you keep your main keys near the front door/wall when home.

There is another vid on Yt where you can just hold one of the buttons down on the FOB and temporarily disable the smart key function. I think it’s lock/unlock together, but it’s been covered in the forum before

On my 2021, I can hold the lock button, double-press the unlock, and the red light flashes four times, it does not transmit until a button is pressed again. Pretty easy to touch a button and have it transmitting again though.

So you might want to test this with kid or significant other. I have noticed if I leave my wife in car and she locks the doors from inside. I can not unlock the doors by touching them. She usually has to hit the unlock or I have to pull out my fob and hit unlock. I going to test this to confirm I have not lost my mind. Note the LC is usually running when she does this as she stayed in vehicle while I ran inside to get take out or something like that.

To add on to the car knowing where the key is, at least on my 2013 I can use tech stream to configure it such that the car can start with the key anywhere inside, or only in the front seat.

So there is an ability to track location with some level of granularity.

Is this a battery saving feature?

The car knows if the key is inside or outside, someone can't unlock the car from the outside if you are inside with the key.

Yes this.

Also this might sound stupid too but did you try to lock yourself in the car and have someone else try to open it?

I have been locking it from the inside and I trust it is smart enough to let someone outside unlock it

I tried this today with the engine off.

Lock the door with the key inside and then several seconds later the door unlocks and a message saying key inside vehicle appears.

Lock the door a 2nd time and the door remains locked.

So it only unlocks the first time you lock it with the key inside. The 2nd time it remained locked.

Just FYI
