As soon as it warms up I need to build a simple small dock. Ideally it would be large enough to accomodate a couple of lawn chairs or a bench, serve as a platform to fish, and accomodate getting in/out of a small 10' jon boat. I'd prefer it blended in fairly well with the shore line and trees. I was thinking of something that ran somewhat parallel with the shoreline rather than mainly stick out into the water. Maybe 4x6 or 4x8 in size.

Any ideas where to start?

Edit - I should of specified this is for a small freshwater lake.

Do you want it to float?

How far off shore do you want it?

4x6 or 4x8 sounds a little small. You could make several sections that size and hook them together so you can have enough room for chairs and getting around.

If it is shallow we drive the smaller landscaping timbers into the bottom and use 2"x12"s (by how ever long you want) for the platform. Works very well and is very sturdy. Then we used the 2"x12"s for a 4'x12' platform near shore for lawnchairs.

Moj,

My buddy has a dock on his lake that is basically a 10x10 deck with black plastic floats. The interesting thing is that it has a trolling motor attached with a solar powered charger, electric/winch anchor.

There is a railing on 3 sides and a hole in the middle to drop lines. It is a great way to spend an afternoon with the guys, and is much more comfortable than fishing from a small boat.

Seasonal variations in water levels in the lakes are also adressed by this design.
