well I have made two of those bumpers as you can see.
they take a few days to make.

not sure how I would make one with out the truck here.

really not sure what I would sell one for.
I don't have a template or any way to make sure it would fit as the tolerences are pretty close.

I would add more support to the front of the frame on the next one. that is go back along the frame rails with more support.

no problems yet, but you can see the top pull away from the hood a bit on a really hard down ward pull.

you should be able to copy it from the pictures that I posted.

If I knew how to weld, or owned a welder, I would!

If you decide to make another, get me a quote! Mine is an 85 4Runner, should be the same mounting pattern as yours. :meh:

Again, very nice work!

man, i wish you realizedhow much your thread has helped me, i can only put in words the problems it saved me from and i am truely impressed and have followed everything youve done. this is the only thread i have read althe way through. i would love to keep in contact, but please realize how much you have helped others

Thanks for the info. It helps me a lot to see a guy do it in his garage because I'm starting to attempt this in the next few months in a one car garage. Also your wife's truck is sweet, now my wife to be wants a FJ Cruiser to wheel with my 4Runner.

thanks, those are some of the best compliments that I have gotten. lol, if you look at the links this post has gone world wide. that is pretty cool.

now on to the news. both trucks are still working well.
baby boy is now 11 months old.
we are having a second child some time in october!!! so Jacob will have some one to play with.
wife is 11 weeks and morning sick... bummer!!!

I am turning 50 this november.

here is a bit of an up date on building a toyota rock crawler.

you remember or read back on the rapid air down valves.

we have these little bee's that love to pack little holes full of leaves, mud, pine sap. the same sized hole that is in the air compressor drain valves that we used for the rapid air down.

same size as the screw holes on drills, grinders. ect....

well we have been using a paper clip to dig the mud, sap out. we have messed up several of the air down valves. once you use a plyers to close them down to not leak they are not worth a crap anymore. they leak.

so I went and bought 12 of the valves to replace the old ones. I asked one of the (old guys) about half my age about a cap of some kind that would seal these up.
I explained to him what we were doing and using them for. he looked at me like I had three heads.
I said, I want some kind of plastic or rubber cap that would fit over the head of the valve to keep crap out of it.. then I could see he lit up with an idea..

so....... on the Kobalt valves that are sold at lowes. a rubber cap for a 1/2 inch bolt seals them up very well. and are tight enough that I think they will stay on. I bought 4 extra ones for each truck.

ps I tried spraying oil in the holes to keep the bee's away. all it did was to lossen up the thin layer of rubber on the inside of the valves.
on these valves don't crank them down. just tighten them with your fingers enough so they stop letting air out.

ps. 10 oz of rv anti freeze in each tire, really helps to balance them out. even with the rebar welded around the out side.. see above for rim peal back. the anti freeze dosn't rust out the rim like the cold weather washer fuild I started out with. and the rv stuff is enviromentaly (sp) friendly!! I do not know how or why this works. I think it works as a damper for how out of balance the tire is. you would think it would go to the outer most out of balance part of the tire but it dosn't. you have to add a bit now and then.. it is also wild to see it squirt out when the bead becomes unseated. I had no idea of how many times or how much the bead unseates untill I started using this stuff.

so waiting now on the tests to see if the new baby is a boy, girl, or just ok.. remember, don't judge, the wife has a huge cancer history, and we are old. we just want to make sure we are haveing a healthy, good chance at life baby.

I am glad that I have helped out at least 4 of the 30,000 people that have looked at this thread. I thank each one of you for your positive comments. the wife just loves to hear that her truck is the (s***)... stay tuned for the next child... I am scared again.. a million things for a healthy baby. as a nurse I beat my brain all the time with all the what ifs.

Those are some extreme modifiactions! Great job!!! I belive you have been welding for quite some time. These are great builds. I feel an 80 series four door may bee in your future. My wife loves hers and it fits lots of kids! I keep her 92 landcruiser going and she gives me the go on my freaky toyota 22r 4x4 projects. I am inspired by these builds!! the nice welds and clean prep.

well going to have a girl this time... we ran all the tests we did with jacob due to our age and her cancer history. Every thing is just fine... (thank God). didn't think it would happen this soon so I guess unless she wants three one of us needs to get fixed...:o

so we will continue to have blue and pink trucks... :grinpimp:

welding... I wish that I was in doors. they they would look really nice. welding in the wind is tough. you have to use flux core and that stuff sucks any ways. you use a lot of wire for a small weld, and it is dirty. cloggs up the feed the line, the weld. every thing.

but thanks for the compiment. most of those welds are of course out side, with the wind blowing, seems like all the time.

you can see the arc change places with every gust of wind. Makes it hard to lay down the (dimes) type welds that you can do indoors. also the flux core you have to clean the welds like stick welding. some times you just can't get in there. then there is the mid west rust issue, rust makes a weld look like crap, you have to turn up the heat and hope the rust boils to the surface of the weld. then with the heat up that high you burn holes really easy.

Even though some of this would have been soooooo much easier in a shop. I am kinda proud that all of this has been done in a gravel drive with just basic tools.

don't forget you can make a really pretty weld that won't hold shait,,, you can make a chicken shait looking weld that if the penetration is good will hold just fine.

thanks for the thread. i love the 8" pipe cap diff gaurd idea. i did not read if you upgraded the rear axle to the 86-up model. most people do this because of better drum brakes, a couple extra inches in width (matched to front with spacers) and might also be stronger (thicker tube or gussets or something). also did you extend the diff breathers up high to keep water from getting in there?
