Have an 89 fj62 with a 193k on the ticker and I don t even think twice about jumping in it heading for the mountain to go sking which is about an hour up the highway at 75mph and an hour of up hill into the mountains with three guys and gear. truck is riding on 32x11.5x15s. Downfall maybe I may burn a tank of fuel but its worth it.The 88 I have gets better mileage but also sets on stock wheels and tires.

Check the compression. They will run perfectly on 5 cylinders - but will lack power.

don't ask me how I know..

My 62 is a dog, but on a very long downhill on the freeway in Montana one night in December of 1994 I hit 98 mph indicated on the speedometer (which I had repeatedly calculated as 2% slow when timed with the mile markers--slightly oversized tires, too). So, I figured I was right at the 100 mph barrier.
I've also cruised up I-5 from southern Cal towards Sacramento with a 6X10 Wells Cargo trailer weighing in at nearly 3000 lbs at 70 mph continuous, netting 11 mpg. Maybe I had a tailwind.
So, she's a dog, but she'll exceed the speed limit. I don't push her so much these days. She's in the midst of body work and a pending paint job.

If you think there is something wrong w/ the 3FE performance - trust your gut.

I am kind of surprised by the lack of tech in this thread so far...

I say this b/c I was complaining about my 3FE locally, and several mechanics just said, "they are slow and stinky."

Well I checked the timing, and it was off. Setting her ~10 degrees BTDC made a huge difference.

Then I checked the o2 sensor - dead. Replaced it and responsiveness picked up, stink went down, mileage went up.

Follow your instincts and troubleshoot...

Good advice, I've posted the things I've done here many times, main reason I didn't go thru them again. Both of the things you've done were included.

See....Ive done a good tune up on my 62 (O2's, filters, plugs, wires, EGR, FPR etc) and NONE of it made a BIT of difference. It still lumbered along like it was still asleep.
I have thoughts of pulling the heads, doing a good cleaning and having the injectors rebuilt in the mean time while I get the Vortec parts together.
The one thing that I havent done is check the timing.
I have just gotten to a point where..."I guess this is all its got."
I will say, that I did the injector service from WalMart for 20 bucks...that ACTUALLY did make a difference in the performance feel. Not like I was holding on for dear life...but I did feel it!
230K on the odo, its tired Im sure...but it has NEVER left me stranded and has always gotten me to where Im going.

LOL!

That is why you have a thread on the Vortec!
