For rewireing a FJ40 one piece at a time...How good are the painless kits? SOR and CCOT both say theirs are good. What is the difference? Do these kits all come with all plug connectors ect? Are they really painless or wiring a nightmare?

They're expensive.

For a 40, go with an ezwiring harness or something cheaper...I read about "centech"??maybe? here too.

Check out www.ezwiring.com look into the 12 circuit harness. Labeled well, good fuse box, all the GM connectors, lots of wire, etc.....$160. You can't beat that.

I thought my EZwiring kit was pretty easy to put in as well.

Seriously. When you buy Painless, it's not painless...you pay out the ass for it.

depends on your experience with wiring. not painless though. go with tommys advice, also do a search on wiring, painless, etc. theres many many threads on this subject with some good advice.

When I had my 40 I went with the Painless (I did not know about the other cheaper versions). Completely stirpped all my wiring and slowly rewired the whole thing taking it step by step and securing all wire connections very well. It was relatively simple and I think it took more time to put everything in the wire looms than it did to lay it out and wire it.

I took me a week to do it, working on it a few hours a night. Maybe a total of 20 hours. But I am very detail oriented (some say anal) and took my time, I am sure it can be done much quicker.

I do not doubt that the other versions are just as good, the one from Painless was universal for 40's, Scouts and Broncos so there was no specific wiring for the Cruiser.

Good luck! And I did save the beer until I was done  there are quite a few wires.

painFUL

I installed the painless in my 40. It was faily simple but time consuming. I got mine for a trade deal so price wasnt the issue. The hardest part was tying in the column and I had hooked up the hazard switch up wrong. I'll tell you it sure is nice hitting bumps and not having the headlight turn off!
