I’m in the middle of planning out painting my FJ40 and plan on priming the entire body inside and out (no chassis/axles). I’ll be using Restoration Shop self-etch, epoxy, and high-build primers.

For those of you who’ve actually painted your own FJ40:

How much primer did you end up using?
How much paint did you end up using?

Did a gallon of each type cover the body, or did you need more?

Any tips for avoiding waste (especially inside the tub and under dash)?

Trying to get real-world numbers before I start mixing so I don’t run out or overspend. Appreciate any advice from folks who’ve done it already.

A neighbor did the work on mine. He painted the outside including the roof top and the inside not including the roof; back about 1985. It was Flat Tan auto paint at $50/gal. Price of job included 1 gal. It wasn't even close enough, he bought the second gallon, still not enough so I bought the 3 gallon and ended up with like a pint in a can as left over. He didn't know Flat paint has to be shot as is - no thinning to shoot when he did the bid. Anyway, 7 coats on the outside and 5 on the inside - most of its still sorta there and look good for many years

Having a hard time remembering how much primer but i can say that 532 Mustard over a white sealer needs
almost every ounce of 2 gallons to get every part coated well in a frame off. @dmaddox had same experience.

Sounds like @charliemeyer007 was using a single stage paint in the above post. Mine included the 2 gallons of color
and anywhere from 3 to 5 coats of clear coat on top of it....so bit different process

Even though I had a rotisserie...its nigh impossible to get all the body done well in one spray. I would suggest you
get the underside done first on the body and then in a different spray iteration tackle the topside.

I used the following to just paint the exterior and dash. I painted the rest of the inside and underneath with different products:
  • 1/2 gallon of primer. 2 coats
  • 1.5 gallons of paint. 4-5 coats
  • 1.5 gallons of clear. 4-5 coats
