How many triple locked 100's here?

triple locked. And I use my front locker 2-3x per year, actually more this year than the last couple, I've been wheeling more. I don't "save it" for anything- when I see big pokey stuff, I flip it on.. same as the AC, if I get hot I push that button too without hesitation.

One point that hasn't been made is to me, ATRAC is more reactive, while lockers are more proactive. With lockers you are engaging maximum traction before you actually need it, which hopefully means the tire that didn't lose grip can carry you through with a little momentum, with forward motion relatively uninterrupted. With ATRAC, a wheel needs to slip before something engages, so you've lost a little bit of oomph there prior to the grippy tire getting more drive. It's really hard to pinpoint though since speed, line selection, RPM's, even left-foot braking could all be influences that could have the same or more contribution as ATRAC vs. locker. Really tough to do a true apple to apple.

If you have the ability to run them all, go for it- MIB! If you only have one, then learn to wheel it and enjoy it.

I remember seeing a youtube video showing the 100 series ascending a steep grade with ATRAC and then with diff locks. I'll see about posting a link next time I am on the computer (as opposed to my phone) unless someone else finds it first.

Update....let's see if this works from my phone.

great video, but I agree with what Kofoed said, I think tires played a huge role in that. I'd like to see the same test done with identical wheels/tires/pressure on all three.

This is what I gathered looking at teh ATRAC vids. No way would I want it to react on a steep, rocky, whooped-out, climb (wheel spin) and then shut off after 10 seconds.

Also sometimes you really need WOT in a sandy washes and dunes and going easy or experiencing shock loading would suck. I could see the value in the ATRAC, just not for the stuff I do....

Meeee ARBs front and rear.

Also, i hate atrac. Need to figure out a switch to be able to turn it off when i want to so i can drive with no nannys.

This is encouraging. I'm getting LASIK surgery this week...once I'm back in the saddle, I'll wire up my compressor and start experimenting with my front locker.

Hopefully your Lasik went will. I am still happy with my results 15 years later.

RE: The video above

I've made that hill many times with ATRAC and Duratracs... Some times first try, other times a few and another day 6 tries. That day I couldn't do it. Off camera I failed 3 times to make it. The track was so loose the lines didn't matter.

You guys are seeing the edited version... Dobie (locked truck) made it up first shot. The other two 100's tried several times each to do it, and failed.

Tires for sure play a role and Nick would have probably been able to do it with rear and center only if he had decent tires.

6 tries video from a different day:

LASIK went well! Thanks for the well wish. Still healing and some days I see spectacularly, others, not so much. Haven't been driving much because of the inconsistency, but doc said I'll stabilize. It hasn't even been a week yet, so I'll be patient. While I've been waiting and had nothing else to do, I did wire up my compressor and today I hooked everything up and played with it in the grass. I thought it was hard to maneuver with just the center and rear locked...but now triple locked...it turns...but you're really only going straight ahead unless it's really really slick. I wired the lockers independent and I'm glad I did. I just like having full control. I wish my locker made more noise air purging when I disengaged it...I can't hear it at all. So I just have to drive around and I feel the difference knowing it disengaged. Maybe since I have the time, I'll wire up the indicator. Rob has a nice writeup on TLC...

Rob, in the vid, you chose to stay out of the ruts and made it without too much drama...so the lines did matter a little it seems. In this case the front locker made all the difference in the case of Dobie?

I don't doubt that the details are different in a Hundy, but in 80's a front locker can become a liability to your birfields if you're trying to turn with the front locked. How are 100-series CV's holding up in fully locked rigs?

Triple Locked...Yeah, I use both lockers quite often. Why not? I have run a lot of loose, rock step trails recently (elephant hill, dark canyon, canyonlands, san juans). Center locks automatically in 4 lo and few buttons later; slow and steady.

I would say A-Trac causes more of a liability then a locker in low traction conditions.

My LC is triple locked with ARB front and rear, and regeared to 4.88s.

My LC is triple locked with ATRAC. Started with just a rear locker for first 5 years and did a lot of trails.
The big ledge on Gold Bar Rim, a lot of cheering from the peanut gallery, and too much skinny pedal took 7 teeth off the front ring gear.
So new gear and an ARB in the front. Drove that for 3 years and front locker came in handy a few times a year.
After that about 3 years ago needed to replace front diff pinion seal, so as long as I was in there, give a mouse a cookie, etc.
Installed 4:88s and low range gear in T-case. Now I don't use rear locker as much and front is pretty rare to use.

Haha, this thread is now reminding me of an older friend of mine when he finally got his Ferrari.

"1 of 1. It's the only 6M gated front engine V12 with this front seat stitching option, color combo, wheel option, etc. for 1995."

I just smiled back and let him enjoy his perceived moment of uniqueness. Then we resumed bashing competitors about their inferior laser technology over beers. The good ol' days.
