Just wondering. Quite a few people out here with 3B's I noticed. I've got a 3B in my Land ***** and it has done about 170,000 km's and is a prime candidate for a turbo-intercooler setup:D. Only problem I currently have is that the starter sometimes goes kkgggrrrrrrrrrr and doesn't engage in the starter ring to spin the motor. Most horrible sound, prob the starter needs some cleaning inside I reckon.
Other than that, no problems.
It gives me around 11ltr/100km (you work out what mpg that is, I'm no good with numbers) and I change the oil and filter every 5,000km's. It hardly uses any oil, in between oil changes the level drops 5mm on the dipstick. Absolutely no smoke whatsoever.
I'm using Nipparts oil filters, usually MAN diesel filters and good quality 10W-40 semi synthetic oil.

So, how many miles has your 3B done? turbo'd? Any problems? Mileage? How often do you change the oil and filter?is it using oil? smoking? Anything else?

My BJ42 shows 260,000km's ,non turbo'd , I get 24 to 28 mpg,and I have been changing the oil and filter appx, every 3k miles .It runs well , no blue smoke at start up, and has good compression. Except for a small/pesky, side cover oil leak ,it uses hardly any oil between changes-max would be 1/2 quart

no idea how many K are on this engine (lots) but it is turbo'd
replaced cracked head im pretty sure it was from my own stupidity (let the coolant level get to low)
used Toyota head and head gasket and im glad i did because the new headgasket is far better
milage averages about 11L/100K but as bad as 16L/100K when towing heavy
i change the oil and filter every 5000K
Esso 15W40 and a Mann filter fuel filter every third oil change

I have wrecked a BJ60 with a documented 625,XXX km. I had to kill it because the frame looked like Swiss cheese. The motor still ran very nice, with minimal oil leakage.

A guy in our club just retired a bj60 with 1.3million kms on it - engine still runs but the frame and body fell apart. That's some major kms.

422,000km, has averaged a solid 11 l/km since new, still normally aspirated but a T3 is in the works. Has had regular, routine maintenance as per the FSM, oil and filter every 3 months (used to use 10W-30 Rotella T, now Quaker State HDX 15W-40). Have replaced most ancilliarry gear at one point or another, but the injectors have only been serviced (tired springs and worn in nozzles, but worked well) once, I just replaced the governor diaphram (was still serviceable, but a little soft) and replaced the double valve springs in situ (tired, but not broken) once. That's it, the heads never been off, and all bearings are original. Okay, I did replace the oil pan (rust hole...) with a baffled unit off a late B engine (a far superior designed unit).

Oh forgot to say, the wife and the dog both think 3B's and old men rock! Something to do with harmonic vibrations... I think... ;)
By the way, JoeCanadian, I used to make jokes about running submerged when my 60s altimeter ran to the negative side, but your rigs' actually gone diving, I'm impressed!!! Cheers!

575,000kms, about 300,000 kms are turbo'd. The oil level drops but I'm pretty sure it's a turbo seal and not the engine.

247,000 kms on my 42 original kms

675,000 on my BJ60, driven daily, starts in -30C and burns no oil..

410,000 on my last one, same deal, burned no oil...

250,000 on my BJ42... it sounds great, .... I love 3B's...

Wow! Amazing stuff! I knew these are bombproof engines but this just prooves it!

@Joecanadian
First of all, how did it end up in the drink? Did it still run afterwards when the water was expelled, oil changed etcetera..?

Keep them coming guys!

MY BJ 42 had 325 000 kms on the clock when I bought it and the clock was broken. Old service records went back 4 years before I got it and they all said 325000 kms , so who knows ??? It ran fine but what I knew about diesels when I bought it was nothing. Smoked at startup and smoked a little down the road and made a lot more noise than my honda. Ran it for eight thousand miles and it had a tap that never went way and finally my mechanic and a compression test said that one cylinder had perished. So, I decided to rebuild it. Once I got it apart the only thing we could really find was a worn out face on a rocker arm. I had already received the rebuild kit from ROODOGs so I just swallowed hard and went for it. Its now got 400 miles on it and hopefully will go another whatever 325,000 km is in miles!

BJ42 4spd 357k on the clock. Stopped just after I bought it from a mate. I estimate that I've done close to 100k but it wouldn't suprise me if it had done over 500k. Still runs really well. Runs a bit rough 1st start, smokes a bit whitesh/blueish especially in winter but after about a minute it idles nicely.

I knew both the previous owners. Original owner rarely went above 80km/hr and he towed a Van around Oz with it. 2nd owner treated like he stole it. Drove it on the beach every weekend and flogged it and also towed an 18ft boat with it. Both serviced the vehicle atleast every 5k. I drive it like I stole it and am not afraid to rev it hard well beyond 3k rpm. I also keep it well serviced.

The fuel was turned up when I got it and I've cranked it up some more. It has no problems doing 110km down the freeway in fact it runs smoother at 120km. Doesn't blow any smoke unless I'm really caning it on the beach constantly, aka foot flat to the floor and high revs going up a steep dune.

Gets anywhere from 11L-14L/100 depending on how I drive it and if its loaded up with camping gear. Leaks oil out the usual places, side cover, rear main oil seal, bit of blowby keeping the right hand chassis rail lubed.

But its 'still' off the road getting the rust cutout.

i bought my 84 bj60 last march and it read 348000 and the odometer apparently had been left unhooked for several years . ishobie owned this rig over 5 years ago i believe . change oil every 3000 and fuel filter @ the same time been running veggie since April and put on another 10000 km since purchased so when i put on the odometer cable /speedo i found out my milage is probably really about 448000 min . is my daily driver and money pending a turbo is in the future .
mike/ moose .

Hi Mike, I got rid of it about 10 years ago, I bet it has atleast 500k on it. That truck ran 24 hrs a day for most of its life in the arctic.

going on 300,000km

Diesels theoretically go "forever" with continued maintenance. The 3Bs are sleeved as well which preserves the block pretty well. My question would be when do you do a full rebuild vs. a gasket set overhaul?

Low oil pressure or low compression - rebuild.

Leaky - gasket set overhaul.

No one ever talks about reringing 3Bs here though, which is something I have been considering for mine since it could be done in a weekend and hopefully help with my oil consumption and significant blowby. Its attractive for me since my mains and conrod bearings are new, and I've had the head off enough times to know that the bores look good.
