Have a no start '89 FJ62 with about 364k miles on it. It's my daily driver.
Drove home Monday evening 45mi with no issues. Stopped along the way to fill up and it started up just fine.
Went out Tuesday morning to strong cracking but no start. Several attempts, no joy. I did notice no fuel smell. Took wife's 4Runner for the rest of the week until I could get some time to look further into this issue.
Today I got to spend some time diagnosing the issue.
I have strong crank, spark at the plugs, all the fuses in the box are good.
I can hear a faint noise in the gas tank when the key is turned on.
Opened the fuel line at the filter and didn't get anything when the key turned on or while trying to start. I also can't hear any clicks from the passenger kick panel as has been the habit in the past.
Is there any thing I'm missing? There is sound at the tank when the ignition is turned to ON but no fuel from the input side of the fuel filter.
Is the fuel pump broke?
Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Either it’s broken, a line is clogged/crimped or there’s something gumming up/covering the intake mesh strainer in the tank. Swapping the pump requires dropping the tank which is a pain just bc the tank is heavy and unwieldy.

If you can hear the pump it is most likely fine, but if you are not getting fuel at all I’d wager either the rubber hose or metal tube that the pump connects to on the sending unit broke inside the tank.

If the 62's fuel pump logic is the same as an 80s, pump only runs when you're cranking or the engine is running.

Have I read that you will be selling new fuel pump brackets for the 62?

@mkaustin, if you do end up dropping the tank then take a good look at this bracket. If it's not in great shape I'd buy a new one from Matt if he has them available.

On the 62 you have to short the FP to B+ on the diagnostic port and turn the key on (not start) to get the pump to run. Just turning the key on won't do it.

Even if your pump is running, that doesn't mean it's putting out any flow or pressure as I found out when I was troubleshooting mine a few months ago. Best test is to check the pressure. On a 62 it's easy using this adapter from LC engineering and a 1/8npt gauge.

This post has some some info on a replacement pump and the adaptor.

Hope that helps.

unless the connector in the driver rear quarter panel is all corroded

When was the pump last replaced?
Never! It's been running just fine for the past 35yrs. But all good things must come to an end. The same is with my fuel pump I guess.

I had the FP and B+ contacts jumpered when testing. That is when I could hear "something" in the fuel tank running w/ the key in the ON position.
I'm guessing that something popped between the pump and the top of the fuel line. It has plenty of fuel as I had just filled up earlier that evening.
Just strange that it went out w/o any symptoms. It's my DD and I pay attention to the performance.

Now I have to get 3/4 tank of fuel out of it so I can drop the tank. ...... Such is life w/ these beasts.

We bought the trunk when I was working in KY. Previous owner had it for 11 mnths before we picked it up. It was in Tenn for only 1 yr before we moved back to TX. No rust in this truck.
(And I did check the connectors in the driver rear panel.)

there is a drain plug in the tank, use 5 gallon buckets. jack it up if needed for clearance

Mine did the exact same thing. Pulled in the garage fine one evening, wouldn't start the next morning. Pump ran fine just like yours, just no flow.

toy-tek, What was the solution for your truck?
Was it the pump or the connections above the pump?

Pump failed. Delphi CFE 0486 is a direct replacement. See my link in post #6 for more.

I don't see any way the internal "connections" could fail, the connector hose from the pump to the hardline at the plate is captive. It can't go anywhere, unless maybe the rubber hose just disintegrated. My hose was original, and in good enough condition I probably could have used it with the new pump (but I didn't).

As I mentioned before, I'd recommend also testing your pressure/regulator. If your regulator is failed it could indirectly lead to pump failure.
