I'm procrastinating about doing this project myself in the cold of my garage (if the rig will even fit -- i never tried :D )

I'm sure Ty has done a poll for this but i havent added 'search' to my life yet :flipoff2:

TIA for time estimates

about an hour if you have not done it before. I find it easier to get at the A/C belt from below after removing the engine splash pan above the steering shock.

Belt Debriefing:

The change took about an hour for this noobie :flipoff2: of course i had to PM cdan twice

The AC belt (lower fatter one) is the easiest to remove once the splash guard is removed -- just make sure you loosen the adjuster bolt so the pulley can reach its max height (pushed up) -- then its cake to slip off.

The Alternator adjuster bolt is a BITCH!!! the adjuster bolt is in a most horrible spot -- you have to manuever around hoses and s***. and of course the center bolt isnt the same size as the AC so have the socket collection close.

But after some cursing and bitching and a tear in the latex gloves, you should be close to having it unscrewed enough.

With this simple change the truck sounds great. the whistle sound is gone and the tension feels just right.

NEXT PROJECT: Birfs!!!

Don't really need the socket collection close, only need 10mm, 12mm and 14mm for about 90%+ of all bolts on any Toyota, just have those three handy and you'll be fine. As for the latex gloves, well no wonder you had trouble, you can't work in condoms!! :flipoff2: I have no trouble wearing gloves like that for bearing repacks or something but never for normal work. You have to get dirty before it'll work! :D

it snowed in nj so the bottom of the truck was a mess, hence the gloves.

i havent received my fsm so i didnt have socket #'s and had to play "guess which socket" =)

lets get to the good advise you could have given me.. is there a trick to the alt adjuster bolt?

Actually the FSM doesn't have the sizes for the bolts, atleast I've never noticed it. The only real trick to the alternator adjusting bolt is to crack the locking one loose first, then the actual adjustment, which you have to turn quite a bit, spray some WD40 on the threads and use a gear-wrench, if you push down on the belts at the same time it provides some friction for the turning bolt so you can just zip along usually. I've tried sockets and other things on that bolt and it sucks, best is a box-end gear-wrench.

Good Luck...

When I fitted the bottom belt, it was a cow son! and it was a proper belt from Toyota, even with the adjuster at it most slackest position, the only way I could get the belt on was, get the belt on the as far as I could, then turn the engine over on the crank bolt to pop it on the rest of the way. I can amagine an after market belt having these probs but not one from Toyota, well I suppose there is always one!
