Hello, I am just interested in LC enthusiasts opinions on the condition of the frame of this BJ70 I am getting. It looks good to me but just thought I'd ask. How does the engine look too? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks !

PS I am not interested in the cosmetic appearance of the truck as much as its mechanical soundness and ride. TLC will come after, but just the basics are for now. cheers
Get a screwdriver and start poking around on the frame. Rubberized undercoating can hide a lot.
Looks like there are some lines not hooked up to a canister by the P/S and fire wall and on the passenger inner fender well by shock tower. Batteries look to not be maintained as evident by the corrosion on the bracket and terminals.. Given my impression on just seeing pics I would definitely poke the rear frame by the rear spring hanger for soundness. I would go thru all the fluids/filters and change them to start a good base line. Good Luck and welcome to the 70 CLUB...

Bring a ball peen and start smacking stuff on the frame to look for weak spots

if there are a few weak spots in the frame is this a major deal or a can be fixed and krowned?
Hello,
The engine looks battered and there is rust. However, the chassis and suspension look suspiciously "clean."
It appears the coating/paint fairy visited this Cruiser, at least its chassis.
The suspension looks well replaced.
As someone wrote, poke the coating for rust.
The shots are not enough to look for body paint bubbling due to corrosion. Check the fenders first.

personally I wouldn't touch the thing, I'd put a pretty good guess that all that coating sprayed all over it is to hide what's under it more than to protect what's under it, your call but I wouldn't go there with a dodgy looking truck like that

hey guys thanks again for the honest help. just wanted to add that i am paying 5000 for the truck and looking to put at least 1000 into it this summer alone if not more. (most likely more) . I just cant pass up the opportunity to own a bj70. I am taking a risk, yes, but a semi knowledgeable one at that. if you could even call it that

Can you weld? If so a grand could go a long way in frame and body work. If you have to farm the repairs out it will take at least twice that to get it solid based on the pics and obvious lack of basic maintenance under the hood. I bet this one will have a "lot of surprises " along the way.
Pull some carpets up and check the floors, pull the plugs hiding the body mount bolts as well, take a look behind the interior panels at the rear wheels and quarters.
That truck has been for sale since last summer if i remember correctly, original asking price was over 10g, it has come down quite a bit.

This is what the owner said of the truck mechanically when I asked, there are currently 265 000km on the truck give or take.
" the car mechanically is in perfect perfect condition i change the timing belt at ( 223000 km ) , i do change the oil and filter
on time with full synthetic oil,i change the fuel filter recently,i change the tires 5 months before and they are very good.
the 4x4 is working smoothly with no problems.The frame has some rust spots but overall its in very good condition.In side its
perfect the seals cover ( front $ back ) are in good condition.

If you have not given him any money yet I would run... You could find one with the same rust issues but the details will show regular maintenance and you will be money ahead. For a little more you could get something better but it might take a little time. If this is a toy then you have time on your side. If this is a DD then have alternate transportation lined up with this one. Just my opinion and do what you want but too many red flags for me, been for sale a long time, price cut in half etc.. Good Luck whatever you decide.
3B's don't have timing belt (or chain for that matter). The timing on a 3B is based on gears...

Lol i do have another vehicle that i can use while attempt to bring the BJ up to snuff and baby the hell out of it. as for the ad and the seller i am just happy to be taking the cruiser and put time and $ into it while learning about the vehicles hands on. cheers and thanks to all who helped!
