75% of the time is says no data available when I check it.

It’s not OTA. Requires disc/card upgrade and purchase at dealer.

For at least '16+, the weather data comes in over the air on HD radio frequencies. You have to be near a broadcasting HD radio station for the weather info and map on the display to work. If you are in range, you get the latest radar and weather forecast/report automatically. If you are not in range, the display will say no data. I assume that's what you mean by OEM weather map update?

I think you are thinking about the nav maps.

Pretty sure in the pre-16s it comes across with an XM subscription, which I don't have, so no weather for me. OMG... how will I survive?

Yes it's 16+ .. though I'm not sure where the HD radio stations are located.

In Florida when heading out for a day in the sun.... where that isolated torrential down pour matters.
