How Does a 1HZ Compare to a 2F?

never drove my 60 with a 2F, but i've been driving it with a 1HZ for three years and love it. It's no race car but I can cruise 80+mph on the highway without difficulty (33"s, 3.70's, h55f). I averge around 21mpg city, and 25mpg on the highway easy. A turbo would be sweet, maybe soon.

That's pretty good mpg (us mpg?)... Is the truck unloaded? loaded? roof rack? bull bar?

I've got a few pictures of my HZ conversion, but haven't mastered MUD posting photos yet. To be honest - look at Rob Lassman's photos of the red 60 with the 12ht. Mine looks almost exactly the same, with a few tweeks where Rob and I did things different (I've got AC, Glow Plugs that work, Huge fuel filter, relocated batteries to rear QP, free flow 3" exhaust & safari turbo). Rob added a low pressure oil cutoff, and kept the Vacuum shift 4x4. The two trucks are almost twins sitting side by side.

Add the turbo and some weight and you'll get 15mpg in town and 21+- on HWY (US MPG). And, you'll have to back off the throttle to stay under control - still learning after 10 years of a floored 2f. I weigh 7,100 lbs and am a brick with grout on top (Maggiolina on roof). I drive - to drive, not for mileage. If I took the roof top off and drove normal, I'd be getting 25+ on the highway - but w/two tanks I can still go 600+ miles :).

There should be 750+ miles this weekend going on, so I'll check.

The sad truth comes out - of me at least. 577 miles on the odometer, 39 gallons (US). Add 10% to the odometer reading due to tires/gearing - as near as I can figure on those HWY odometer checks - 16.25 MPG.

That was HWY 395 (California) from 7,000 ft. to sea level, and about 3/4 of a day in 2nd gear bouncing and exploring in Death Valley. And HWY speeds of 55-70 mph.

I'm sure if I became the pass-ee, instead of the pass-or, the economy would go up. This is real world, a heavy 60 series.

yeah i think keeping you foot out of it would help...but what's the fun in that! Did you turn up your fuel at all for the turbo? I actually turned mine down a little because it was smoking slightly under hard acceleration. I guess there are a lot of factors that come into play. I drive mine like an old lady, I can see that changing when I install a turbo though... ;)

EDIT: i have a short write up with a couple photos of my 1HZ install if someone wants it.

I actually turned the fuel down an 1/8 on the AK trip last summer. My driving partner had a bigger lead foot than me. I'm running a balancing act between EGT's-Radiator Temps-Power-Speed.

1HZ vs 2f. Without turbo the 2f is more peppy, less torque, better mileage. With turbo - hold on, we're getting close to V-8 and still getting 20+mpg. My 60 is 7100lbs, I now have to let off on the throttle - I'm learning all new driving habits - it's not idle or floored, it's mid-throttle. Offroad is even that much more amazing.

If I had it to do all over again (Oh, I will be, the 2nd HZ will be going into the 45).

Great new info!
We would all love to see photos. How the hell did you get to 7100lbs?
I thought my 60 was a brick at 6120lbs?

Would love to see the HZ in the gasser 60.
What did you do for a trany?
Did the HZ come turboed? I assume you got it from Japan4X4?
12 or 24 volt?
Did you get the tach to work?
Custom Motor mounts?
What did you do for a throttle cable?
So many questions.

VT cruiser has tons of great info, but he cheated, he started with a diesel. :grinpimp: Great info and pics on your site though.

Over the past month since I started this thread I have been looking into all kinds of Toyota engine swaps that might have more power, 1FZ, 1UZ, 2UZ, 3UZ, 1HD, 1PZ, 12HT......... It all just comes back to the 1HZ as the best option. (with a supercharger of course:D )

And then soon there will be the 12H-T vs 1HZ thread... where lovers of old school Toyota will praise the 12H-T for not having a timing belt and then the other side will praise the 1HZ for still managing to be in production... :) can't wait!

I was told that when the 1HZ was introduced into oz the advertising blurb said something like" Now you no longer need a turbo" :flipoff2:

But if you don't really need .. sure your really want ! :D

:) true, starting with a 24v diesel truck did make the wiring easier but the rest will still apply.

A couple things i didn't mention in the write up:
- a 3fe radiator has the correct input/output orientation for the 1hz to avoid having to run longer-than-necessary water hoses.
- If your 1HZ does not come with an A/C pump, and 3fe pump will bolt up to the 1HZ bracket and the pulleys line up. It may require custom hoses however.
- An Autometer #2888 diesel tach fits nicely in the stock dash location and works well.
- The fuel cut-off solenoid does not require 24v for the truck to run, 12v is sufficient.

Are the FJ7* radiators the same as a FJ60? If so and your planning on using the FJ60 radiator for a 1HZ swap you maybe able to attach the 1HZ fan shroud to the FJ60 radiator.
Or even use the 1HZ radiator.
This is a pic of a 3F radiator and a 1HZ radiator from a 7* series.Basically the same with slightly different angles on the inlet/outlet tunes and the 1HZ has a slightly bigger bottom tank.
Expansion tank sits on opposite sides

But if you don't really need .. sure your really want ! :D

I looked at used/rebuilt 1HZ supercharger kit yesterday but it was an earlier model then one I have posted pics of.
And now the clutch in my HZJ75 needs replacing :frown::shotts: so now I cant afford a blower for a little while

Do you have pictures of your coolant hose lay out?

More good things to take note of, thanks.
I remember you posting something about the 3FE radiator, it's in my notes.
