There is a dearth of information on the interwebs. Even Warn's link for an owner's manual is down.

So I have a drum with a hole in it and a new Warn cable with a loop on it. How is it supposed to attach?

Typically it’s a set screw that holds the loop to the drum. But the loop on mine is much smaller and looks more like a terminal lug

Push the end of the wire rope through the hole in the drum, clamp it off inside the drum. If you were using synthetic line, you could just tie a simple knot inside the drum.

For planetary winches that is true, but not for the mighty 8274.

JUST A SAFETY CAUTION: However you end up attaching your rope...it will not by itself take any pulls, light or hard. Always leave 8 or so wraps on the drum.

Undo that cable clamp, put the cable through the drum to the inside, and reinstall the cable clamp with as tight of a loop as you can. The end plate has to come off to get to the inside.

The cable clamp hold down (or hold-down tab) doesn't keep the winch cable on, it's the wraps around the drum. That's why ^^ John is correct, always leave 8 or so wraps on the drum.
