I bought a H55 5spd transmission and transfer case from a fellow in NY off of Ebay. I never put it in my FJ and I am not sure I am going to. Now my question. If I sell this thing I would like to be sure it is what I am selling. I dont have any reason to doubt him I just want to be 100% sure. I found one photo of a h55 and it looked a little different than the one I have. Any leads to pics or marking info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, David

There are 4 different configurations of a H55. First, the input shaft. These are different from petrol to diesel engines. A FJ input shaft will be a coarse spline, a HJ will be a fine spline. Second, the selector housing has the same dimensions outside, but a different location of gearstick in the centre of the housing. Thirdly, to tell between a H55 and a H55F (that went into a Toyota Dyna) was a column shift but same dimensions as a Landcruiser gearbox. I am from Australia, and of course the models can change so I hope this helps. I have pulled gearboxes apart in my spare time of many Landcruisers. Contact me if you need any further help.

To my understanding, the H55F's that will work for an FJ will also work for an HJ. (I put one on my HJ-45). The six-cylinder diesels are the same as the 2F in terms of connecting with the tranny. However, where the problem comes in is if you have an H55F that was meant for a four-cylinder diesel. In other words, the H55F from my BJ-42 would fit on my BJ-73 but would not fit behind the "H" diesel in my HJ-45.

Watch also for the longer housing on the H55. The newer ('85 +) '60 series had the extension housing that makes it appear as an H55 but without the linkage and gearing. If you have a linkage that comes out of the top cover to an arm on the extension housing then you likely have the H55.

Put a shifter on it - do you have 6 diff shift slots vs. 5? (5 fwd + 1 reverse)

column shift 5 speed???? can you help me out with that? I would LOVE to add a column shift 5 speed to my early FJ55(with column shift)
