I found some spots where the clear coat is chipping, it's faintly scattered no larger than 10" x 10" area, but rather than a touch up spray paint, anyone knows what it might cost for a body shop to remove the hood and match the body paint? Rest of car's body is nice and shine.

Most likely around $300-1,500 to repaint and blend panels depending on where you go. "You get what you pay for" applies times about 100 when it comes to bodywork!

That's crazy, I might as well get a new hood w/ the correct paint to match my car, don't mind slight diff. in color due to age.

You'll be looking around $500 or less.

As far as I know, any new panel (from Toyota at least) will not be painted, but primed only.

Yeah, bodywork isn't cheap. It's mainly prep, sand, and paint and clearcoat supplies. Plus, taping off body panels if they do it with the hood on the vehicle so it can be blended will add to that.

In addition, a decent shop that knows how to blend (yes, there are plenty that don't) usually doesn't charge Maaco prices. Keep in mind, a lot of the cheaper prices you'll get are for single-stage paints without a clear or for a shop that uses your existing paint as the base layer and doesn't sand to make your finish even... I've seen plenty of cases where shops paint right over rock chips or have a failed finish because they didn't sand and prime the panel.

That, plus once it's painted and baked, any respectable shop will have to wetsand and buff any runs, dirt specks, or orange peel out of the finish.

I have 18 years of detailing experience including paint prep, and when I say a good paint job isn't cheap, it's not cheap.

Edit: added the fact that the type of finish contributes to cost as well, as most pearlescent finishes are either two or three stage paint jobs.

Let it go. Dont repaint. Your hood will add some character to the rest of the truck, Patina.! Spend that money on the guts of the truck, that will take you longer in the end. Unless it bothers you too much, might save money removing the hood and prepping it for paint yourself, then letting the professionals paint.

You won't know until you get an estimate or two. As others have said you get what you pay for. Also price varies on where you reside I'm sure.

I have some deep scratches in the center of my hood. I covered 90% of that with a 3m hood blackout panel from
Trevor at Crawlorado. Search 'hood blackout panel" for pics.

monsterliner will be my next hood job...

Local shop quoted me $900.00 to repaint hood (has a couple of almost unnoticeable rock chips and one tiny hail ding). Clear coat is starting to fade a bit in some areas and I have 'Smoky Topaz Mica' paint (known have base-coat issues in years 98-99).

I've painted some in the past...and its a LOT of work if done right.

Had two quotes, one was $2200 and one was $500. Both were reputable shops and the quotes included the same amount of work, which included removing all old paint, sanding, prep, and separate paint and clearcoat layers. For a 15 yo truck, I didn't care if the $500 paint job wasn't perfect, but it actually came out really nice.

What about wrapping it matt black?

I'm ready and need to paint the hood and roof (both are suffering from some clearcoat chipping off) very soon, quote I got so far was $1000 from a body shop and about $800 from Maaco. For just the roof and hood, I thought both are a bit high for the same type of painting process (I assume), are they in proper pricing range? I was thinking about negotiating Maaco down to $700 and I'm good to go, has anyone had good experience with them? I've heard a lot of negative reviews, but I'm just trying to see if there are exceptions or more than half of time with them is bad, then it would be a no go for me.
Thanks.
