Hood lift strut - who makes a good replacement

Can anyone tell me the secret to removing the old hood struts? Just whack it with a hammer? Pry gently? What's the secret?

I don't think the OEM struts are removable - as said, the only way is to unscrew the ball stud. Hopefully your replacements came with new studs, or else you will be grinding the originals off the old strut.

I think you are the first to post anything negative. Do they hold the hood in place when open? That is really all they are meant to do. Or do you have them on the back?
Anyone else finding Lou's struts lack in the longevity department?

Posted from a brick.

I installed both hood and rear struts at the same time. Rear still work perfectly. The hood stays up, but doesn't lift up or even offer any assistance when lifting. Actually there is a lot of resistance when lifting the hood by hand.

Worked great when I got them, but slowly starting getting worse.

Agreed, they do not snap off the ball stud (not easily anyway). You have to unscrew the ball stud. The new ones I ordered came with everything needed.

I put in Lou's struts a little over 4 years/50k miles ago. They are just now starting to fade and will probably last through the summer... although I found that with the current cold snap I have to make sure to watch my head when getting in the back

Hello guys,

Looking at a replacement for the tired hood lift strut, I landed here and then did check all the links and found out that Lou's struts is now called Liftsupportsdepot.com, even the old link forwards to this website. But the reason for this post is that I checked their warranty and found this:

Lift Supports for the Hood, Trunk, Hatch, Liftgate or Tailgate:
Are covered with a Limited Lifetime warranty .

  1. Provided your original purchase was for a pair (unless your application only uses 1 lift support)
  2. These must be installed in the intended vehicle and the unit stops working properly or to your satisfaction.

also:

in the event that the units stop performing after 180 days then you would be responsible to ship them to us and enclose a check for $8.00 (for shipments inside the USA) as well as proof of purchase from us to cover the return postage, and we will then send you the replacement unit. Please contact us before the units are shipped for an RMA number.

So for those who replaced them before from Lou's and have already started failing again, may want to consider checking this alternative. I would imagine they will honor that warranty. At least, worth giving it a shot.

regards!

Great to know!! I was actually thinking of getting another pair because the ones I bought from Mr. Lou a few years back is now failing. I'll be sure to do this soon. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions and that Lou is now lift depot. Ordered from them on AMZN

Anyone swapped out their rear liftgate struts?

Yup. Mr. Lou's has them as well. Switched them out earlier this year.

Thinking about going OEM in the front though. ~$65/ea. Anyone know who manufactures the fronts and if they're more robust/longer-lasting than Mr. Lou's?

I have used the liftsupportsdepot struts on front and back of my 80 and 2 100s. I had one rear on my 80 fail and they replaced it no questions asked over a year later. I recommend them as they have given me good service.

Just purchased a set for the hood and liftgate from liftsupportsdepot. They're offering free shipping today, so it cost a grand total of $63 for new struts front and rear.

I just replaced mind from lift support depot with some from NAPA. They lasted 3 years. The Napa ones are the same part minus the lift support depot sticker.
