Hi guys!

I have a 1989 HJ75 Troopy(with the 2H) that I'll be building up over the next year. The truck was my father's which he had since new! now that it has been handed down to me, I want to build a really nice troopy. I love this old truck and would never part with It! I have sooo many childhood memories! Needs a lot of body work done and a few other things here n there, but with some effort it could be a real nice Rig, it also has Toyota factory cable diff locks in it :D(included pic) and from what I hear they are highly sort after, is this correct?

My question is: Will 35x12.5 Baja Claws stuff the truck up so badly (with standard diff ratios) that I will regret the 35"s? and will have wasted my money?

The suspension is pretty ____ now, so my future suspension set up at this stage is looking like: 2" lifted OME springs, snake racing 2" extended shackles...unsure on shocks, and a 2" body lift if I need it.

I would love to fit front shock hoops(see pic below) and have something a little special like Pro Comp MX6R shocks. What do you guys think?

Cheers,
charlie.

Thats pretty cool having factory lockers and they are sought after;)
The baja claws will be a waste of money in the long term and 35s will bog the engine down.

IMO a 3 inch lift would be plenty, any more and you will attract the coppers.

I would be saving for an engine swap before anything else, maybe a 12HT:cool:

do the body work, clean it up nicely... you might like it just the way it is. (with a 12HT swapped in)(or a 1HZT)

Pretty cool dad ticking the box for factory lockers option
my mates 89 hj75 troopy has a 2h with after market turbo runs 35's and std diff ratio with a 2" lifted springs and reversed front springs its didnt really seem to make any real noticeable power loss to the motor (maybe the turbo gives it that bit more it needs) but before 35's since hes had it its always had 33's just a few rubbing issues under full flex theres a pic in ( Post Pics Of Your Modded 7x Series ) pg 19

Hello,

I see an abused heirloom too.

Been there (not done that, thankfully.) Abused heirlooms usually end up in the wrecker or slowly decaying with some uncaring owner.

It should be good enough to keep the old lady up and running, in good shape, with her share of offroading.

Hey mate, dont bother with claws, i have tried them and think they are a waste of time especially in Australian conditions. They are horrible on the road and dig holes in the sand, and slip off rocks pretty easily. Get a decent pair of 33inch muddies, I have found MTRs to be a good all rounder. Also look at mickey thompson MTZ's as they are pretty big in the australian market. Also dont dismiss the standard leaves. I have found my standard saggy leaves with extended shackles and no swaybar to flex much better than lifted leaves. I have a mate with the same truck as mine with different suspension setups and you can definatley tell the difference on the trails. But if you are doing a bit of touring lifted leaves will be the go because it firms up the ride, better load carrying ability and less body roll on the road.

Also lifting is overated, you dont need to lift landcruisers that much to fit bigger rubber. Its more a case of diff relocation and trimming. And you also want to keep the COG very low especially in a troopy as they are very tall for their width. I would just try a set of 33's and see if they fit on standard suspension. If they dont i would go a 1 or 2inch body lift to clear the guards before a suspension lift but that is just my personal opinion. Also leaves more money to fix that body work.

Dual lockers, 33inch muddies and flexy suspension is pretty much unstoppable.

Cheers rosco, clint and gib for your positive thoughts.

crushers and juanj, I never said anything to give you the impression that I would be abusing it..oh you where assuming, we know what the mother of assumption is.... ;)

I see your point on the Baja claws. Same every else i read, MTZ's would be better.

I called pro Comp(after a week of no reply from my email.) and they couldn't tell me or email any info, shock valving etc....this was the tech department I talked to:bang: I think I go for a setup that uses the stock shock mounts to save my self a lot of messing around, It will be a lot cheaper as well.

Interesting thoughts about the stock leafs gib, i keep it in mind.

12HT hey, the only places that I can find so far are engine recon work shops that will do you one on an exchange basis. Any one know other good places I could find one?

The best way to get a 12HT in oz is buy the whole car it came in. As long as you can see it start and run you should be ok.
Finding one under 300k/klm is getting hard these days ,but a 12HT can go a lot longer than that.
I would expect to pay about 2-4 k for a rusty old 61 series with a good engine..

Otherwise live with the 2H and save up for a 1HZ/1HD T.

Be honest about the condition of your vehicle. If its rusty dont pour too much cash into it unless you plan on swapping all the good stuff onto another with a good body.

Hello,

I agree with Rosco. You should consider getting a 1HZ/1HD instead of a 12HT. The 2H is a respectable powerplant, though.

Anyway, the 2H/cable lockers combination is almost unstoppable.

A troopy of that vintage will go anywhere, it just wont do it very fast. Anything you do to try and make it fast (without spending mega dollars) will compromise something else, offroad ability, reliability, etc...

A 2H will do the speed limit on a decent road without too many worries, it might not accelerate to the speed limit as fast as other, but it will get there.

You haven't told us much about your intended use of this vehicle, if it's more about the looks than the function, fit the lift, shock loops, and big gnarly tires. If you want to go and get places look at Ultimate or Old Man Emu suspension, with perhaps a lift of 2" over stock, and a decent set of 31" BFG tires.

Even without lockers, that combination will go most places you'd be wanting to go, your lockers will just make it all the easier!

The 2H has quite a nice engine note with a straight through exhaust (I've got a 60 series)

Hello,

That nice note is one thing I like a lot from the 2H.

Many moons ago I was badly disappointed when I learned that only long wheelbase models had the 2H, and there was no HJ40. Or HJ70, for that matter.

I was also disapointed there were no HJ73 etc:D
A factory fitted 12HT or 1HD T into the 7* series would also be nice

Hello Rosco,

Yes, that would be nice. No new/used engine to source, no mounts to modify... Ready to enjoy.
