Hey guys,

I've got a 1984 HJ47 2h (needing rebuild but I'm upgrading) with power steer and 5-speed (I'm not exactly sure where they came from, perhaps a 60 series?). I've put a deposit on a 1HZ for a really good price ($1800) with only 18,000 km on it from a wrecker. Does anyone know of an itemised list of exactly what would have to get done before driving away? My other option was a 12ht which I sourced from a mechanic for $7,500 with 250,000 km on it.

Just trying to figure out costs etc.

Also, any advice around the 1HZ or 12ht generally would be great!

Thanks,

I should have added - the engine comes with a gearbox.

Get the 12HT if you can. Better engine than a 1HZ and I have long experience with both. Not bagging on the 1HZ, it's a fantastic engine, but the 12HT is one of the best diesels Toyota ever made in my opinion

12HT is is better, with no timing belt and a mechanical fuel pump , but it is problably easier to get new parts for the 1HZ

They've made the 1HZ for ~35 years and its still in production.

1HZ also has a mechanical IP and loads of people have added turbos to them without issue unless you push a lot of boost

The timing belt on the 1HZ is a super easy belt to change.

Parts for it will be avail for at least a generation to come......

12HT had a short run and hasnt been manufactured in a while, parts are avail but it can take some work to find.

Wish they had made that motor for an extended period of time.

Back to the 1HZ in a 40 series, McKinnons in AU makes a nice H55 mount for a 1HZ swap along with engine mounts.

They're not the only ones

Although I concur with you guys ("the older, the better"), if I don't miss something, there is a non negligible price difference between these two engines: the asking price of the 12H-T is 4 times the price of the 1HZ (and 12 times the mileage too!)...

to be fair, your right. If I were in his shoes that would probably be the bottom line for me too.

It really is a shame that the 12HT is as rare and expensive as it is.

on the cost side of things though, a 12HT should be a direct drop in to replace his 2H, whereas the 1HZ will require at least aftermarket mounts, maybe a few other things. Not sure its enough to justify the price offset, probably not. But worth considering too

@harryb47 there are two versions of the 1HZ, the later versions from a 100 series had the lighter pistons and the weaker R series gearbox as standard, the earlier 1HZ is a better option. Just something to consider if you want to turbo your engine.
1HZ with the H15# or H55 (early gearbox) would be the better choice, do you know what the 1HZ is out of?
I agree that a 12HT is a better engine but parts are getting harder to come by, 1HZ parts are still available

Matt
