I was digging around in the back of my Hilux Surf today and found this.

This thing looks nothing like the winch control for my Warn or anything else I've owned.
Does the screw end fasten on inside the truck somewhere? I had a quick look at the winch and I have no clue where it fastens too.
Are these little factory winches strong enough for light duty, like snow extraction or am I better off to remove in and find a bigger winch.
This winch has a small drum on the right side.

on the right hand side of the winch you will see a small screw off cap, screw the cap off and push and screw this on. acording to the New Zealanders this winch is good for 6000 lbs.
HTHs

I had to run out in the cold and have another look and you are right Wayne!
I screwed the cap off and fastened it to that connection. I thought that cap was an oil fill or something.:o
It's kind of a neat setup now that I have seen it all together.

Yes, they are very cool, and very expensive if you break or lose it...so dont :D

Same one used on the eletric winch for the BJ74, HJ61, and such...

interesting the cannon type plug is of same make as many used in Aircraft.

Cool, isn't it used as a military connection too?

gb

yup, Mil Spec stuff. All Aircraft connectors have a Military spec on them, same with fluids.

many are made by this company. to buy any of these in Van try aircraft shops or avionic shops like Western Avionics. They should stock some of these. There are zillion different types. So if you see one you like make a note of the part number on it.

Otherwise you need to search the tables for type and size.......time consuming.

I will try to get a pic up tomorrow but I highly doubt this winch is anywhere near 3600 kg's as a previous post mentions. Maybe 3-4 thousand pounds I would think. Why would anyone bother with ordering such a small winch from the factory I do not know.
It is a factory Toyota winch but it looks very light duty.

maybe one of these days i will get a chance to try out the one that came on the LJ78...
then again i hope i never have to...doyou have the cool aluminum factory skid plate under the winch?

What's the rating of the one on the LJ78?

saskdiesel, usually the rating is on a tag that is glued to the winch body. Your's has fallen off I take it? I might have a picture of a similar winch on my computer, however will be be able to access it for a bit.

EDIT...yup, this is the one we had and sold a while back...

1500KG.

And the Surf.

After reading the top of the winch it does say 1500kg which is 3300lbs. I would guess it may pull 4000lbs max but why offer such a small winch in the first place?
Maybe to pull a boat out of the water? It would be handy for dragging mule deer out of coulies with deep bottom though.

What does the LJ78 have on it? The planetary one that HZJ series got in the early 90's?

i really need to go look now...

it looks identical to the one on the 81 series... whew, thank goodness. you had me worried for a moment there...

So I take it that my winch control is worth more than the little winch?
I could always use it to lift the top off of my FJ40 and other mundane tasks.

I kinda feel sorry for the little thing as it doesnt look to have a lot of use. Toyota did grease the cable up pretty good though!
Still a neat accessory I think. I would also guess that the original owner ordered it for the "look" and not for vehicle recovery.
When I first got my Surf I removed all of the Japanese accessories but a buddy of mine convinced me into putting it all back on as it just looked like all the other 4Runners.
This little bugger and the mount are a heavy combo. I would say just as heavy as my XD9000 and its mount.
