High praise for the Pioneer speaker replacement behind stock grille!

This is a great mod to bring your 80 up to today's sound standards. Much easier to hear all the tones without cranking up the volume. I think my comfortable listening setting is now 1/2 of what I had before and still much clearer.

Would also like to know any update tips on units to replace my 3rd row upper speakers and the one in the rear passenger panel. Learning in advance about this project on mud saved me money and time!

This may be a silly question - and one to which the answer may be obvious (but it isn't to me) - but, which wire running to the factory front speakers is positive and which wire is negative? I want to hook them up correctly (not just in-phase), but there are no markings on my speakers, and I can't tell anything on the gray or blue wires. Also, are they the same on the rears, as I will be doing those next.

Thanks for any (hopefully quick) help........I've got everything disassembled right now.

Pretty sure the stock speaker terminals were marked when I did mine.

I can say that the Pioneer TS-G1644R fit perfectly in the front door. Just had to redrill the mounting holes, but it fits perfectly.

A+++++ will recommend to anyone

i am ordering the G1644R today . !

Just replaced some POS small blingy Boston speakers (installed by the PO) with the Pioneers (TS-G-1644R) and stock grilles. I did the rear doors too (TS-G-1044R). Sounds way better. Looks way better. Thanks for posting this. For reference, I have an aftermarket head unit (Pioneer AVH-P2300) and removed the factory amp. I also disconnected the dash speakers but left the factory roof speakers and sub connected.

Anyone know the size of the speakers on the right side rear quarter panel? Also size for the two speakers on top at the rear. Thank You

I recently purchased a pair of Pioneer speakers that are either 4" or 4.25" dia. I hope they fit as I believe I read somewhere that the stk ones are 4.25" dia.

I just saw a 5.2" model and 6.5" model. Which did you use in front door?

Jose, I'm ordering as we speak, but I want to replace all the speakers. I ordered 4 x 3 1/2" two for the dash and two for the rear, 4.5" for the 2nd row doors, 6.5" for the front doors, but there's the one speaker on the right back panel, what size is that?

Fronts are 5.25" IIRC..

Thanks. I think I'll end up going with 6.5" and using a small spacer and clearanc-ing the rear doors..

Just so you all know, the Pioneers (and some others) are not a true 6.5" speaker.
They are a universal 5.25" with mounting tabs to fit a 6.5" cutout.

For comparison, the Polks are a true 6.5" (and won't fit behind the factory grille)

How did the 3 1/2s work in the dash and rear? What make and model did you install?

Just bought these. Thanks everyone for the part #'s

Good to know. Thanks.

Right side rear is the stock sub and it is a 6" I believe, but it is crap and usually toasted by this age. Might consider replacing or a new setup all together. I have a 8" bazooka tube in the back and it fills the truck up with nice low-end.

Got it, thank you for your help! I want to keep it stock size to keep it in the same area, I don't blast my music much. Surprisingly all my oem speakers are in good shape, doesn't produce the greatest sounds but they work as intended.
