hi there fellas, i reckon my front differential needs a overhaul.
i get a high pich noise coming from under the car when driving in speeds above 40mp/h. had it since i bought the car 2 months ago. but getting pretty tired of the sound now.

guessing it is the front diff, do i need to rebuild everything with new ring and pinion or will a new bearing kit suffice? or could it be the transfer? i know these cars have some history with the front differentials.

any suggestions are highly welcome.

it is a 94 HDJ-80 VX, manual tranny.

I don't think the ring and pinion would develop the noise unless it has been damaged. Had a similar sound in an older car and it was the pinion bearing.

first i did was to replace the oils in everything that had with the driveline, and grease up everything ofcourse.

the noise occurs when i accelerate, not when i am off the accelerator or in neutral.

That's what my truck sounded like when the diff needed work. I had it replaced, then the replacement went out in 6 months. :(

Is it just the toyota whistle? The 1fz does make a whistle sound under acceleration which is normal.

@inkpot Just purchased around 3 weeks ago, its an after work/weekend project. Have only just gotten it running decently, new tires this week, servicing fluids next week. Do you have any suggestions so that I can eliminate SOME of the possibilities?

Remove the front driveshaft, lock the center diff, and remove the drive flanges. If it goes away it's in the front diff. No sense in guessing when you can troubleshoot in steps.

It may be the gear driven transfer case. I just swapped the transfercase from my last 80, which got rolled over and then disassembled, to my current 80 when I regeared and part timed it. The pitch of the gear whine changed slightly from the original unit to this one I just put in. This is how I know that the "whining" I have been hearing since I got into 80's 3.5 years ago is indeed the transfercase. Just today I removed the interior to dynamat the floor. These are trucks not SUV cars like they sell today.
