Hi all,

I've been dealing with the dreaded cargo area leak in my 06 LX. In diagnosing, I mistakenly thought it was leaking from the foam seal around the 3rd brake light cover / blank (since my LX still has the whale tail spoiler). I peeled off the original blank, added silicone sealant, and replaced. However, it seems to be leaking worse, so I'd like to just find a replacement piece.

Does anyone know the part number for the OEM blank?

I assume it would come with the attached foam similar to the third brake light assy.

Thanks!

What's the dreaded leak? It's been pouring here today and earlier today I noticed what sounded like a waterfall noise coming from the rear. I too have the wail tail. I have an '04.

There seem to be a few relatively common leaks that lead to water entering the cargo area of 100s: the seal around the 3rd brake light (or the blank piece where the brake light would go for those of us with spoilers), the large gasket around the rear cargo area hatch, the attachment points between the roof rack / spoiler and vehicle body, and the rear-most venting windows. Folks seem to realize they have a leak (myself included), when the carpet in the rear cargo area starts to get wet, usually closest to the rear hatch. Notably, for the leaks I'm referring to, water seems to drain through the hatch/body and drain out near carpet level, not necessarily drip down from above. Here are a few threads that can probably give you a lot more info if you think it may be affecting you:

Had water leak in rear cargo floor by the lift gate. Inspected the 3rd brake light from above and indeed the seal is shot and likely the cause after large rain over Christmas Eve. I’ve run a bead of clear silicone to seal it up.
Also be sure there’s no leaves or pine straw along the top lift gate weatherstripping along the top otherwise in a downfall the water can get trapped and overflow.

Posting this here for others to use if they wish. Hopefully it will help expedite the repair for those in the future.

I had a rear cargo leak and this past summer used butyl rope to reseal the rear hatch blank plate where the 3rd brake light went on earlier models. I also replaced the cargo hatch body side seal.

However, the leak returned as the butyl rope came loose due to two of the four tabs that hold the center of the plate in have snapped off. I'm not sure if I broke them or a previous owner but anyway, The plate pulled away from the hatch and the gap opened up enough to let the leak came back and soaked the rear carpet.

So I removed that and used a pet carpet cleaner wet vac with Oxyclean and white vinegar to get the wet dog smell / mildew out and let dry for a couple of days.

I removed the whale tail and blanking plate to clean up all the butyl residue. I used denatured alcohol and ALOT of elbow grease. This time I used 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive on both the plate and hatch. I bolted the plate back on and reinstalled the whale tail quickly as this stuff sets up quick. Paint rollers fit perfectly between the whale tail and plate in order to keep constant pressure on the plate while the adhesive cured.

I let it cure for 24 hours then cleaned up the residue with Goo Gone and elbow grease. I then washed the Goo Gone residue off and let dry. Followed by a top coating of the adhesive with black RTV and cleaned up excess with denatured alcohol.

While I had it all apart, I replaced the hatch rivets as they were loose and possibly letting water in along with replacing the wiring harness jumper as the grommet had dried out, shrunk and was not creating a good seal anymore. It was only $20.
I used the 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive on the new rivets before install as an added measure to keep water out.
