Hi everyone,

I"m new here. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills in northern CA. We get a bit of snow at our house, and also have a lot of great logging roads to explore. I'm not a hard core offroader. We have a newer Mazda crossover for daily driving, but have kept an older Jeep Grand Cherokee as a backup for deeper snow and trail riding. The Jeep is becoming a bit of a money pit lately, so I am strongly considering replacing it with a LC/LX 100.

Since this isn't an everyday driver, we don't want to spend a lot of money on the car. I'd like to keep it around $10K or less. I also don't want to deal with a lot of niggling problems either! It looks like the 100 series is fairly robust.

There are quite a few '99 LC's in the SF bay area (where I work). The cheaper ones have 100K+ miles. There are two in particular that look interesting - both one owner cars with all receipts, books, and keys. Both have about 145K miles on them, and asking prices are $12.5K. There are a few more 2 owner cars in the area, too, with similar asking prices. There is also a private seller with a '99 LX, 101K miles, asking $12.5K.

Should I consider an LC/LX with this type of mileage?

Most have a towing receiver, but one doesn't. Can these be easily added, or do I need to also add a tranny cooler and other items? I can see occasionally towing a car trailer plus car - no more than 5K lbs.

The LX looks promising, but it has two drawbacks to me: the badge (prefer a Land Cruiser/Toyota label!), and the extra electronics that could be expensive to repair later. Have these early LX470's been fairly problem free like the LCs?

What have others paid recently for early 100 series? I would think the 1 owner high mileage 100's should just under $10K, but maybe that's wishful thinking! The Lexus looks to be priced reasonably, so probably not too much lower on that one.

Any words of wisdom is appreciated!

100-150K is pretty normal.

I say 12.5 for a LX is a pretty good deal, in my eyes it is (knowing in atlanta, "99 sell for around 17-21K)

if your worried about the electronics failing (AHC), replace with a OME lift. It would be the same height as a LX on High setting in the height control.

mine has 108K, and hasnt hiccuped once.

Maintainance records mean to me more than milage. Mike

I have owned my 1999 for years, and have 160,000 miles on it. That's just barely broken in for a LC !! I know another owner with 355,000 miles, no troubles!

Welcome. I sent you a PM.

Read the FAQ's if you haven't already!
There's little not to like about the '99's.

Galen

Thanks for the replies so far! Galen, I have read through the FAQ's and the first 20 pages of the 100 forum. These do seem like the perfect SUV for us.

I have noticed many people are so far out of touch with pricing that it's silly. Actually, the dealers in this area typically ask LESS than private owners for a givien vehicle. Kelly blue book is a joke and hasn't reflected actual market prices for years. Edmunds seems much closer, but usually still high. On lesser vehicle I've bought and sold, Edmunds trade-in is close to private party price, and dealers will give you much less than the Edmunds trade-in. I do not know where LC's and LX's fall, though. They hold their value well, but these are difficult times for SUV's and cars in general.

I"d love to hear what similar cars actually sold for lately!

For the snow, first thing is to buy some real snow tires and get rid of the street tread.
Chain up a 99 and it will take you where you need to be.

Check to see that the 100k milage work was done. Otherwise factor in another $1800 or DIY for under 1/2 that with some skills. Also check if the started has been rebuilt or replaced. It often needs to be done about 120k All 99's have a tranny cooler factory. Be sure to buy one(LC) with a factory rear locker. I've got almost 170k on my '98 with not complaints. If the driver's seat is torn it's pretty easy to remove the leather and have it restitched.

My friend in Chicago came and visited me in Los Angeles about a month ago. See, he deals with snow and ironically had a 1996 (I think) Jeep Grand Cherokee (the one with the 5.9 liter V8). Since we were using the LX470 most of the time he was out here, he ended up going home and buying a cheap 1999 Lexus LX470 with around 104k miles for $9k. It was a private owner with all the records and he loves it. It was so he could keep his BMW M3 (2003) in the garage still. He even ended up taking it to Cleveland with him after 2 weeks.

Personally (if you're open to driving a Lexus) I wouldn't pay extra for an LX over an LC of that age / mileage.

And don't get me started on Atlanta :censor:

I agree, the Land Cruiser is luxurious enough, the Lexus is way over the top. The only reason I kept my LX470 over my 2001 Land Cruiser is because I got $35k (Land Cruiser with 72k miles) in trade versus $10k (85k miles) in 2004 when I got my 2004 Range Rover.

I bought my wifes with 192K and it now has 222K and hasn't missed a beat.

I'd echo what's been written above. I've had my '98 for almost nine years with relatively few problems. I agree wholeheartedly with the guy who said to look for one that has had the 100K mile service (timing belt in particular). That will save you lots of coin.

As to your question about towing hitch, I'm not aware of any differences between a hitch and non hitch equipped '99 except for the receiver itself, which you can have installed for around $300. If you plan to tow 5K lbs, I'd definintely spring for a trailer brake as well. I've towed a camp trailer with my 100 that weighed about the same amount and brakes made a big difference.

You will like this vehicle compared to your Grand Cherokee. A lot.

If you can affort to jump up to a 2000 it is nice to have VSC and TRAC in my opinion, plus you don't have to deal with the weaker front diff. Those topics have been well covered on this forum.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses!

I had a very nice '99 LC just drop in my lap! I'll soon be the new owner of Galen's (GDA62/100) 100. He was kind enough to drive up to the mountains here so that we could test drive the car on the local logging roads. We even forged a creek, crossed a gravel wash, and climbed some sandy hills. We just missed out on the snow as it started right after he left. These trucks are very NICE and smooth! Even more important, my wife loved it! :D

Congrats! I drive a 99. I wouldn't be so worried about mileage. Mine has 140k and I wouldn't be scared to drive it anywhere. There are some maintenance items you will probably have to deal with. Starter contacts are the first to come to my mind. The second is the timing belt at around 90k and I'd do the water pump too. Then you may or may not have problems with the exhaust manifolds ticking (slight leak). I wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks!

This one has 90K miles on it and the timing belt and water pump were just replaced. I heard no ticking noise upon cold start, so hopefully the manifolds are fine. I'll just have to deal with the starter when the time comes. Luckily, there are service manuals with the car, so between that and the starter replacement thread here I may be able to tackle that one myself.
