HIDs would be nice but with so many other things...I opted for the complete IPF headlight housing, bulbs and ARB harness upgrade...it was easily 5 times brighter than stock. Those HIDs would be outstanding as long as the heat and power does not wreak havoc.

Since they Are 35 or 55 watts they are easyer on the elecrical system then reg bulbs. My volt guage used to jump when I turnd the lights now nothin.

Joel,

Lets do the math Watts/volts = amps.

So if you HID lights use a 35w/12 = 2.9 amps.
And HID use the same 35w is for the low/high, no difference in HID land.

Stock lights are what... 55w/65w h/l = 4.5/5.4amp

Some people have used the Hella 90w/130w h4 bulbs, = 6/10.8 amps.

Is my math correct? (I hate math )

I guess no one wants to read what Daniel Stern has to say or thinks he's outdated or outmoded. An HID arc is not the shape of an incandescent arc around which the reflector & lens were designed. So using an HID arc in an incandescent lens/reflector causes light to be scattered where you don't need or want it. Especially in the foreground, while pleasant, leaves less for the background. Your pupils contract to compensate for the brighter foreground & now you can't see the background distinctly. And you might want to see that deer/elk/moose/freight train in the background while you have time to react.

While tempted by the HID conversions (the OEM bi-xenons in my wife's Audi S4 are awesome), I think I'll go with Cibie lens/reflectors, relays, & the brightest H4 bulbs I can find.

That is such a ridiculous difference! I will be adding these to the list of near future mods. Thanks for sharing.

here is a quote from my build....LINK in my signature line....

I GOT PICS!!!!!!!!!

IT BLURRS OFF IN THE DISTANCE WITH STOCK LENSE. $80 WOULD HAVE GOTTEN ME A SHARP CUT OFF ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

I here is the pic of what I will accomplish on my next mod for my runner or 80 hopefully

ildhane is right: "As long as you use reflectors designed for hid you will be fine". Daniel Stern is THE guru in this area - here's what he says: Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply

If you find a 7" lens/reflector built for HIDs, let us all know.

You beat me to it Steve. I was going to post just that article to explain why I decided against putting HIDs in my Hella H4 housings. I'll stick to Osram 65/70W H4 bulbs and be happy. I just recently cleaned my housings good and proper and my lighting is VASTLY improved over what it was before. Looks even better than they did when the housings were brand new.

I run 8000K 50 w HID Full H-4 with High and Low beam , thats is only one bulb that has a movable shield for the different area that the reflector reflects ... And it is adjustable for beam / reflector alignment . I use a Bosch headlight aimer to see the pattern before install and the aligning them with the car / truck .

I have Fogs , spots (H-3) ,(H-1) for the movable spot. You name it in HID's for Night , Day light driving I use the same lights with a City bulb , but the Bulb is a Very bright Diode.

DId you get some kind of error eliminator kit too?
What does it even do??
Hello All,

I am going to be upgrading my headlights to some HID's. I found a thread on here that led me to the following. Wanted to run what I am thinking by some folks, the ones who know, to make sure it should work.

Going to get the IPF H4 Headlamps

Then get this HID setup:

Was going to go with the options of 55W, H4 Hi/Lo, and 6000k

And finally this wiring harness:

What do you guys think?

No eliminator kit. If it is on the DDM site then I think that is for BMW's with a computer.

Oh thanks. I appreciate it. Thought I'd let ya know I subsrcibed to your main build thread. You have a lot of great projects.

I've not read the whole post, but I've found a projector optic works best.

If you must use a reflector type lens, than look for clear glass, as the fluting in the glass only makes for very bad glare.

The wiring harness is less important with HID. Stock would work fine.;)
