Legend has it that on the high pinion (FJ80) 3rds, 5.29's are too thin and break easily. So the thinking is run 4.88's instead. On my runner, I'm running 4.88's and 35's and it feels a bit undergeared. Supposedly with 5.29's it would be slightly overgeared. 3.0 V-6, daily driver, will have duals soon, but we have hills here.

Opinions? Are the 5.29's weak? Need to make a decision soon.

Tony,
The uber truck I had, had 5-29's in it. It was hi pinion fj-80 too.
They were reverse cut... not sure if that makes a difference.

On the highway it would do 65-70 easy, if I didn't have the vibration from the drive shaft. I never had a problem, but then again I'm the kinda guy that'll baby his rig no matter how well built it is.

hope that helps

get some treated by bobby long. they are stronger. a friend of my has done plenty of hard wheeling, tellico and such, on his 5.29s and has not had any problems. his runner has duals with 4.7s and stock and runs 36 iroks. its also 22re though.

Slees shortbus has them also, and hasn't had any issues.

Say no more.....

Well....I ordered Yukon 4.88's yesterday from Marlin. When they get here, they're getting shipped to Bobby Long for cryo'ing. Since the back is already done, I figured I'd save $400 or so by leaving it 4.88.

All for wee 35" MTR's :)
