Hi Guys,

Need some help and/or orientation here.

It seems that my head gasket is blown.... 1997 LC 80. it is my DD and money is kind of an issue now. What should I do:

- Fix it myself? How difficult could be and is there someone wiling to give a hand in exchange of pizza, beer and beer....
- Shops choices and thoughts: H&H, Toyota Tech, any other?

BTW, thanks a lot to Rafael for all the orientation, he is been great!!

Thanks in advance,

JC

It’s a big job but nothing terrible. Honestly dealing with the harness is the biggest pain, outside of that it’s just a lot of time. I did mine last year and total cost for materials and shop work for the head was around $17-1800. That was doing all the “while you’re in there” stuff as well.

Like Steve said, it’s not hard but it’s not something you are going to get done over a weekend.

You’re really at the mercy of the machine shop and how quick they can do the head work. Sometimes you get lucky and it’s just a couple weeks...sometimes it 6 weeks.

Emphasis on mercy of the machine shop.

I got really lucky with the machine shop I used. Dropped it off on a Monday and picked back up the following Monday. Guy stays super busy, I explained to him before hand what my schedule was to get it done so I worked with him on drop off times.

I don't want to wait 6 weeks.. well, no one would want!! I am assuming machine shop would take a week or two. Plus one weekend to take it off and another weekend or so to put it back together. My biggest fear is assembling back by myself and miss something.

Fsm is your friend. Follow it step by step and believe me it will start on the first try.

Any chance you could buy a crappy little DD to get you buy for a bit until you can get this done and then flip it back on the market after?

Toyota Pickup

I was thinking about that also, but my wife is a stay home mom and she could be my "Uber" for couple weeks LOL. In fact, I might schedule some work travel during the machine shop time.

Thank you guys for all the help!! looking forward to start the project next weekend or in two from now. @Phares will keep you posted any one else is welcome for pizza, beer and Toyota time... @Roxx thanks again for your guidance.
