But, I don't want him to get the wrong stuff or not do it right.
I am running a 6" ram and it works good. I need to put a better cooler and mod my pump next.
Shorter is better.
Mace pointed out that too long of one will smash your steering stops and then break the tie rod ends.
Ya'll need 7" throw if he has stock steering arms on the axle. They are both running FJ 60 Axles as well.
If your buddy has stock steering arms, the "guy who makes the kit" is wrong.
6" is only right if you have histeer arms, as they are shorter than stock arms.
Lotsa bad/misinformation here.
There is no single ram that is "appropriate" for the situation. There are too many variables that go into which ram is the "perfect" one. The best way to deal with the situation is to measure and figure out what you really need. The buy from there. No one can tell you what you need.
The "cheap" (clevis) cylinders work just fine. They will not die any faster than one with heims on the ends. They are just harder to mount, because you have to make them parallel to the tierod that is moving, which also travels up and down a bit (in addition to back and forth). More complicated does not always mean bad. There are lots of people using the Ag rams with great success..
There is nothing special about the rocklogic rams. They are simply welded rams with heims on the ends. Same thing that Surplus center sells. Nothing else.
All single ended rams will provide more assist one direction that the other. The reason for this is that the actual piston area of the ram is smaller on one side (the shaft gets in the way). Smaller actual piston area = less assist. It has nothing to do with the quality of the ram. If that is a huge concern to you, get a double ended ram and go full hydro.
OK now for mounting the hydro assist. I was thinking that a PSC motorsports 1.25" TR clamp would work: (SC-CL08-K) 1.25 Tie Rod Clamp [SC-CL08-K] - $41.35 : PSC Motorsports, Off-Road Steering Experts but, the 60 series axle is 30mm or 1 3/16" which is 1/16th shy of 1.25" for the clamp. Can he put some sort of thick rubber or something as a spacer for the clamp? Or is there a better way to make a clamp to attach the push rod?

I measured mine the way the guy from PSC told me to and and it is 7 1/4" on my FJ 60 front axle.
I do have the 4x4 labs highsteer/rear steer setup which adds to the distance between the axle housing and the tie rod though.
My high steer arms are way longer then the stock arms. My Tie Rod and Drag link are both 6 1/2" from the center of the Diff housing.
