Hi Guys!

I am new to the forum, and I have a question about what is necessary/required to put bigger tires(285/75R16) on my '00 LX. The vehicle is still a daily driver so I'd like to maintain as much of the factory 'feel' as possible, while ditching the wimpy Michelin LTXs.

-Can I get any tire brand recommendations (quite, but functional off- pavement)?

-Do I need a Castor Correction Kit?
-If so, which one is best?
-Can I install it myself (I am decent with tools)?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

welcome!
there is no need to do anything to run a 285
you must be thinking of the caster correction kits for the 80s

Great news...Sorry about the mix up on the castors, I did a couple of Internet searches prior to posting and that kept coming up…didn’t know it didn’t apply to the 100s.

Do you have any recommendations on tires?
How will the ride and handling be? My wife still drives it, hence the concern.

Thanks!

Many searchable threads on tires...

I just posted in another thread last week about my new Yokohama Geolander A/T-S LT285x75x16 tires...love them so far (only a couple/few hundred miles though). Quiet on-road, but still a good pattern with deep tread for doing some off-road driving.

Shop TireRack, then take the printout of the price to your local Discount Tire, etc. and see if they'll price-match. Your local tax will be less than the $93 shipping from TireRack...

I have a 00 Landcruiser and have had 285x75x16's and 295x75x16's neither of these required any lift or mods BUT the landcruiser lost a ton of power with the 295's and also a good amount with 285's

The stock tire is the 275 70 16 so the next size up is the 265 75 16, Im running those now and Im very pleased they are about 3/4 taller than stock and about 1 inch wider. I have the BFG AT/KO and love them. Barely any power loss and they fill the truck out great. The 285s looked great but it was tight. I also tow a trailer so power was important and I live in Colorado so its even harder to get here because the altitude

Also the 295s in the deep snow with no lift are not good. No room for chains, and the snow piles up in the wheel well.

The 265s look great and run super with very minimal power loss so this might be another option rather than the 285's I can get a picture posted. I dont think a lot of people run them because the number, they think its smaller but the way metric tire sizes work they are bigger

Check out Revo's in that size:bounce:

Bigger tires = less acceleration, worse braking. It will be noticeable if you put 285's on there w/o regearing and beefing up the brakes, especially in the mountains.

everything is possible in real life but on paper, at least, a 265 should not be an 1" wider than a 275 I would think...

I agree and can verify this ;) .

according to BF Goodrich the tko's in a 275/70/16 are 31.1x7.7

the 265/75/16 are 31.7x8.4

285's are 33x8.9

Yea metric sizing!

Ride will be effected if you change from a Passenger tire to an LT tire when you make the switch. My wife noticed. I noticed too and was happy. The D-load rated Revos in 285/75R16 are stiffer. I don't see any point in changing tire size unless you want the additional clearance and the 100 has plenty of stock clearance for dirt roads and mild off road conditions.

Not only that, but it opens the door for spending a lot of money to overcome the new defficiencies:

poor braking => new rotors/pads/SS hoses
poor acceleration => header, new cat/catback, regear the diffs, turbo or super charger ($$$$)

tread width and overall width are significantly different depending on the tire design. Which is it in the BFG specs? And the tread width will vary a lot also, e.g. my 285 MT/Rs have a much narrower tread than the 285 Terra Gs.

This is what I see on the BFG site:
LT275/70R16/D 119S 11.1" on 8" rim ..........31.2" diameter (11.1" section width)
LT265/75R16/D120S 10.6" on 7.5" rim .....31.7" diameter... (10.6" section width)

275 and 265 refer to the "Section Width" as 275mm equals 10.8". The figure you are comparing is the "Tread Width" (which is probably more important than the section width). Floatation tire sizes (i.e. 31x10.5R16) also measure section width and not tread width.

We have 2 hosers now?

Will the real Hoser please stand up?!
