I recently aquired a 76 FJ40. The bearing in the water pump went out, the shaft was wobbling. So I ordered a new water pump from Toyota and went to swap them out tonight. I discovered they aren't the same. My 2F has the oil cooler coming off the thermostat. I guess that is significant. I'm a poor mechanic but I try. So, the water pump I pulled off has an end with 4 holes. The pully/spacer type thing went over that and the fan blade last all held together by 4 loose bolts with lock washers and nuts. The water pump I picked up today from Toyota has an end with 4 bolts imbedded. The holes in the pully and fan blade do not line up with these 4 bolts. So either I need a different water pump to utilize my pully and fan blade. Or I need a new pully and fan blade to utilize my new water pump. My guess is, and I could certainly be wrong, is that the water pump I picked up today from toyota was to be used with a fan clutch. My question is, which was OEM for a 76 FJ40? Any suggestions?

Dang! I just finally did some searching and the more I searched the more confusing this thing gets. So, I guess when they added power steering they swapped to get a double pulley, loosing the clutch fan. Sounds like I need to press off the flange with the 4 bolts on the new water pump and press on the other flange that accepts the double pulley and fan blade, being careful to push on the flange the proper distance to create a good alignment with the pulleys. correct? I hate mechanic work! but I know its good for me. yea,

OEM water pumps from that vintage have been discontinued for years. There is no way your dealer could obtain the correct original pump.

gave up on swapping the flange over, picked up a refurbished unit from Napa that was just the right height and had the correct flange. This little project turned into more than I was expecting.

be glad it didn't blow on the highway - BTDT

New ones are still readily available in the aftermarket as well.;)

Yep, Mark (65swb45) helped me out with mine. Walked me through what I needed. It bolted right up. Working with the vendors on Mud is a great idea for one banana mechanics like me.
