Howdy!
I have a dilemma.
WIRING:
My HJ45 (1980 from South America) needs to be rewired. A mechanic patched up the wiring after the small fire but said he couldn't make heads or tails of the wiring to do a rewire. I provided a wiring diagram someone here referred me to, but the mechanic said it wasn't correct. Currently it starts just fine, but no brake lights etc.
I would like to use a more modern fuse box with minifuses instead of the glass ones.
Would a wiring harness from an FJ40 work? Maybe just extend the wiring to the taillights?
Also, how about the difference between the wiring in gas vs diesel?
ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN
My HJ45 has an H engine that I have been told is basically a tractor/forklift engine. Going 40mph sounds like the engine is at its limit.
Since the plan is to put a small camper on it, along with extra stuff for trips and "overlanding", that engine seems like it will suffer even more.
Also, I live at about 6,500 feet and like the mountains.
I am considering swapping in either a 1HDT or a 1HZ with a 5 Speed manual and split case. I want reliability above all.
If I can cruise at 55-65 mph I will be beyond happy. I prefer back-roads and avoid highways, but traveling sometimes makes a highway unavoidable.
I have heard the 1HZ is pretty slow, but how slow? Would it be substantially better than the H, or barely better?
The 1HDT would definitely give some give a much better response, but I won't be hauling ass in the HJ45, even with upgraded suspension, etc.
Any input advice on these options? Cost of 1HZ vs 1HDT, drive-ability?
Swapping in a gas engine is not an option for this vehicle. I want to keep it diesel and simple.
It will not be a restoration project, but I guess a resto-mod with modern seats, power steering, etc. but keep as much of the old Toyota look as possible.
Thanks!
