I have a 76 fj40, 2f, 4speed...... 80,000miles........ My transmission will not come out of reverse.. Tried adjusting clutch, rocking it, cursing it, still will not move out... Anyone else ever been through this? I was told it may be my synchro....Someone shoot me a answer!!

No synchro in reverse.

Chances are it is somewhere in the top cover. Try removing the shift lever first (press down on the sheet metal retaining ring and rotate 1/4 turn CCW) and move all the shift fork rods back into N (All the slots in a line) with a large screwdriver. If that doesn't work, remove the top cover and see if you can get all the forks into N and that it shifts correectly before you reinstall it.

My friend, your a genius!!! That worked.. I was fixing to drive it to the shop in reverse!! What caused it to do this?

the reverse has an adjustment on the side of the case, it may need to be adjusted or the shift fork could be bent. has it done it again? might have just been a fluke thing.

If it happens again, chances are that something is either wrong or broken in the top cover or the reverse needs adjustment. Used trannys are cheap and you can replace the top cover without removing the tranny. At least you know how to fix it quickly.

It has not done it again... I took it for a spin and everything is working fine, shifts perfect... Ill take a look at the adjustment if it happens again... Thanks for the Help!!!

It's done it about 4 more times.. but only when I let it.. for instance.. going downhill, in first, if i dont hold the shifter up into first it will come out, and then not go back into any gear.... Im thinking that maybe the end of the shift lever is worn. For now my method of fixing it is to leave the boot screws off, and keep a big ass screw driver in the glove box... works everytime,, and impresses people that i dont have to get out to fix it.. nice.. But seriously any ideas on whats doing this???
