[QUOTE="Rainman, post: 9452563, After the hub body is off you'll need a hub wrench. There are two stacked in there with a star washer in between. Take a flat head screw driver and bend the tabs of the star off of the large nut before you loosen. Worst case (you can't get a hub wrench) you can use a flat head screw driver to "chisel" the nut off.

any idea on size of hub wrench needed? I am trying to pull the warns off a 55 and can't take the entire shop in the field. The nut in one of the pictures didn't look more than about a 17mm or so. If that's around the size, then I should be covered.
Thanks

It's something crazy like 53mm. I'm just guessing based on the clearance inside the hub wrench I made. It's a LOT cheaper than the real ones and works just as well.

Recipe:
Take a 2.25" - 2" exhaust adapter and mark the large opening with a sharpie at the 6 hex corners of the nut. Put the adapter in a vice right at the marks and tap the corner out with a hammer. Do that slowly for about tow revs and then drill a hole big enough for a half inch extension or something to pry with. Tada. The perfect hub wrench! For less than a buck.

A genius idea, BRAVO!

AhaahahAaa.... Thanks.

I made one years ago for a fellow Cruiser buddy of mine and gave it to him at his "bachelor/bachelorette" party. (all the men and women were there) Out of all the gifts of tools and toys, he later told me it was his favorite present. I even painted it camo to match his truck.

Great memory!

It's 54mm, but that DIY above is cool.

can I ask how you got the bolt and washer off? My hub cap is off but when I try to remove the bolt the axle spins with the bolt. Do I not have the 4wh engaged/disengaged correctly? Need beer!!

I use a butterfly impact wrench and that spins it loose. You can also use a breaker bar and a rubber mallet for a similar effect.

Slide the cap back on (you may need to put half the small screws back in finger tight), engage the hub, unbolt and slide the hub back off then use a wrench (and mallet if needed) to back the bolt out. Removing the hub while it's engaged won't make any difference.

Thanks I get home at 4. Looking forward to trying this. engage the hub. Should The 4wh shifter be in a certain range ??

No. Locking the hub is just to hold the Birfield. As long as the wheel can't move you're good.

Ok, I had to do the math. (Alcohol involved.)
2.25" is the OD of the pipe that fits inside the adapter.
The hex size is 2x the perpendicular to the flat.
The perpendicular to the flat is 1.125"* cos 60*.
Cos 60* is 1/2. so the hex size is 1.125"x2 or... in metric
57.15mm.

Good enough for a big nut that's not really tight. I commend you.

I can't seem to get that bolt off, just spins for me too. I put the wheels back on and put it on the ground, still didn't work. What I am missing?
