Hi new here, wish I wasn't. I have a 91 fj80 with 339k miles. I have had it for 12 years now i bought it with 220k. After a year or so it started not starting after running any longer than 30 mins. Or so but not always. I always thought it was the starter going bad (had similar prob w/an RV). So I would either leave it running or take my time. I have a 92 LC also so I finally swaped the starter & nope then burnt it out & replaced with new. So I changed the fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, rotor, dist. cap,efi main relay, bypassed charcoal can(with lawn mower filter as described in other post). She was running pretty good before this but not idling that smooth good power while driving just not starting. I also just replaced water pump. The CEL came on about a week before I started the repairs I took the batt out to charge and replaced with new 1 during. Now the CEL doesn't come on at all. Went an bought a scan tool today it acknowledges that it's a Toyota scans & says vehicle not responding. It turns over fine just won't go! I checked w/ohm meter from efi to fuel pump all fine. Jumped the fuel pump it works. What's my problem? help please been at this 4days straight all day I'm losing it!

Check for spark, the fact that the ECU isn't responding leads me to believe it's either not getting power or the ECU has gone bad.

Could it be the ECU because CEL won't come on & it won't communicate with scan tool? If so should I take ECU from my 92(parts car) or is that dumb? Just get a new one?

Chances are 99% its not going to be the ECU. Think simple things first.

Classic sign of a failing ingniter inside of the distributor. When hot won't start. Learned that one on Honda's back in the day. Was a common problem. I would start by checking ignition system. Coil, then dizzy.
Also check the wires for damage going to fuel relay.

Thanks I bet that's it. I already checked the coil and I have a spare threw it in just in case and that wasn't it. I will do that first thing tomorrow and the fusible links just cause.

I think a common failure point ignition wise is the igniter ( ignition module ) if you haven't already covered it.

a 91 is OBD1, you have to do the paperclip thing and count the blinking lights. Where did you even get a scan tool to plug into it?

I can't count the blinks it won't come on at all & I did try that. I got the scan tool @ O'Reileys it's made by Innova model#3120 covers OBD2 & 1 comes with multiple adapters for all makes it has one that plugs into the entire diagnostic where u do the paper clip thing. I am pretty sure it's not sending it codes because the CEL light does not come on at all & it was on before I swapped battery's that reset it now it's gone completely.

When my igniter went bad I still had cel so im going with ecu wouldn't hurt to swap and see what happens.

OK, lets take it from the top.
A 91FJ80 will NEVER respond to a scan tool because it is not OBDII compliant.
If the CE light does NOT illuminate when the key is turned to the ON position, then there is an EFI or power issue. Coil/igniter and all other ignition components are not in play here.
Follow my flowchart to help isolate the issue.

The only thing inside of the distributor are pick up coils. The igniter is piggybacked on the ignition coil.
A failed igniter and/or coil will not effect the CEL.
