Need some help

Traced an oil leak to where the dipstick meets the upper pan. One bolt out, tube slid right out. Problem is, I don't see where the oring goes. What's the deal here. In this pic, the thing that looks like an oring is solid and feels metallic.

Does the o ring just shove on and run up under the tulip (like in the 2nd pic)? Or do I need to force that black piece off and place the o ring there? Sorry, stupid question but I'm dumbfounded here. I tried looking down into theounting boss to make sure there's no o ring there but I can't get a head on view. I stuck a pick in there but came out with nothing.

Thank you. Im not even sure how to get the damn thing off without damaging the tube. Project for tomorrow.

If you can't get it off with a small pick, I'll usually use a fresh razor blade...but you have to go really slow so you don't damage the metal surface. Cut it most of the way through and then the pick will snap the remaining bit off.

My steel picks didn't even dent it. That was after a liberal amount of brake cleaner. I will try razor blades, maybe need to soak overnight in gas if that doesn't work.

Wait until you get to the PCV grommet - it'll make that O-ring look like a 'MyPillow'. ;)

Steve, you've got that right. I couldn't believe what it took to break that PCV valve loose.
