Hi. First thank you to both of you. It's a lot to take in.
1. In following your steps starting with number 2 does it need to be techstream or could I use my autel scanner?
2. Could I buy cheap coils as temporary fix to see if it fixes the misfires?
3. Pretty confident I've fixed all vacuum leaks. I've replaced almost all hoses.
4. I've lost confidence in my dealership so is a. Compression test something I can do at home? Same with the borescope?
5 how can I check fuel pump to confirm/ eliminate it as issue? I saw where you said it can be wonky.
6. On the sai if it's the issue how do you feel about the blockout plate fix? I'm almost 5k into this fix and I don't have much room left to wiggle.

Once again thank you. I can't thank you enough.i assumed this was an easier issue to resolve and the dealership would be able to handle it. That was the beginning of my demise lol.
For number 1 and 2 on your list I would say TechStream is ideal and just about the only resource for complete system diagnostics. Your scanner likely will not be able to get enough data. RockAuto sells Denso Coils, so that would be one of your best resources for "cheap" coils. My $0.02 is to stay away from eBay and Amazon coils and most autoparts coils tend not to last..

For #4, you can rent or buy compression testers and bore scopes, but if you have not done it before it is better to find a repeatable shop or fellow Cruiser Enthusiast to do it.

I'll let the more experienced folks chime in on the other questions.

Great. Thank you.

I really appreciate the detailed responses. FYI, the 5 min recording I took showed 6 of the 8 cylinders misfiring. The only cylinders that did not show a misfire was cylinder 1 and cylinder 6. 5 was by far the worst during the 5 min recording. The owner @Operationlc100 is a really nice guy and IMO really dedicated to correcting the issues. We talked after I had crawled under it and located the leaks and we both agreed that whatever you suggested should be his course of action moving forward.

I agree with the leaks not causing the 420/430. My 2001 had bad leaks on both manifolds and did not show 420/430.
Leak, can be cause for CAT failure.. But I've yet to see one either. One guy in mud claims he replace many CATS due exhaust leak. But offeres no poof.

No codes at all actually. I also agree with purchasing Denso coils. I even have a couple old Toyota coils that were removed due them having splits in the shaft but were working perfectly if he wants to borrow some for testing.

According to owner the MAF sensor was purchased at NAPA. However the coils were purchased off of Ebay.
I'm not crazy about even NAPA. Why, I suspect bootlegs are being returned as genuine, at all parts store. Again, some will do, whatever they can get away with, and they do.
One other thing I noticed that was strange. Upper radiator hose (not OEM) was really bloated. Owner stated that it was only a year old.
That is sign (in new OEM upper rad hose). Radiators cap not functioning properly. It signal, cap stuck. Which increase pressure in entire coolant system. Replace CAP ASAP with OEM. To much pressure and radiator top or the weakest point Will blow!

Junky hose, who knows.
Hi. First thank you to both of you. It's a lot to take in.
1. In following your steps starting with number 2 does it need to be techstream or could I use my autel scanner?
I use tech stream. But make sure to view video I posted above.

Again some of these minor misfire do not set off a DTC, not even shows as pending.
2. Could I buy cheap coils as temporary fix to see if it fixes the misfires?
No, or just may fool you. Although bootlegs do sometimes work for awhile. Get a good set or waste money on junk again.
Parts store (Advance Auto thur world pack), 2 of all 8 gap if not all 8 of Denso bad. WTF. Returns perhaps!

Holiday gift. ;)
I buy Denso TT & regular spark plug and NGK, Denso coils and denso boot kits here. In over 100 sets of plugs, every spark plug gap perfect.

3. Pretty confident I've fixed all vacuum leaks. I've replaced almost all hoses.
Check vacuum leaks with gas like propane. Search youtube on how.

It's not only hoses that leak. I've seen where intake manifold gasket reused, put in backwards and or it's bolts/nuts not torque. There's a thread going now, guy had misfire. Did compression test, Failed. Pulled head. Found two burt/cracked valves. My bet; Improper intake manifold install. Result in vacuum leak between ports of bad valves.

My torque wrenches, which I've many digitals sizes (1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4"). Are my most used tool, during assemble. That and a thumb drive, so I can never cross thread a bolt or nut.

I torque and mark:

I mark all bolt/nut/parts with paint (yellow today). No paint mark, torque wrench comes back out.

Understand the service, and taking you time. We're not a shop, trying to beat the clock.

4. I've lost confidence in my dealership so is a. Compression test something I can do at home? Same with the borescope?
Yes and yes. Borescope on Amazon $100 w/8mm directional camera. You can look back at valves. I've a 360 degree 6mm directionly. They self explanatory on use, plug and play.

Compression test is easy! But must follow FSM. Fuel off, t-body wide open, engine at operating temp, RPM 250 or better. So be ready and fast.
5 how can I check fuel pump to confirm/ eliminate it as issue? I saw where you said it can be wonky.
We can do fuel pressure test and leak down test,. It's laid out, in the FSM

But the 07-07 will stall on hot days, after ascending hill or passing. Then as we let off the gas pedal. Engine dies! They call it vapor lock, but it's not. If hook to OBDII and scan before key off. May see bank 1 & 2 lean. Replace the fuel pump and all good. Done many including my test vehicle.

98-05, tend to crank and fail to fire-up. Then works, then doesn't. Almost alway fuel pump. Seems to be around 25oK miles.,
6. On the sai if it's the issue how do you feel about the blockout plate fix? I'm almost 5k into this fix and I don't have much room left to wiggle.
If you install a block off instead of my S.A.I filter mod or replace S.A.I pump periodically. You'll not be street legal drive on public roads, HWY, steerts.

I can't express enough. How much I'm against block-off kits. I also, see issue coming to me with them installed. Owner must remove, to get into my shop. Unless he trialer in and has no plates

Why block off SAI. I've written up free to the world. A step by step solution. That I've back tested over last 5 years now. Works perfectly. Which keeps, all emissions equipment as factory intend, just better and reduces long term cost.

Some, say my state doesn't check emissions. Good for them. But are they living on different blue ball then us. Or just one of those, that will do whatever they can get away with. Please leave me alone, than. Sure it is small thing, but it does help. I hate those coming in mud justifying block-off kits.

Additionally the starter can be done, and added benefit intake gaskets replaced. Which rubber gasket are shrinking with time. These can, produce a vacuum leaks.

Takes 3 second and $20 to replace my S.A.I. filter. Sure takes work to install. But once in, it's cake.

Once again thank you. I can't thank you enough.i assumed this was an easier issue to resolve and the dealership would be able to handle it. That was the beginning of my demise lol.

Some have their doubts on my theories and procedure. spark plugs, caliper bolt, propellers shaft slide yoke lube, full 12qt AT flushes, cone washers, snap rings, locking washer of wheel bearing, ball joint & TRE R&R, etc. That's find! I just call it like I see it. I do change, when shown I'm wrong or come up with better procedure.

But the S.A.I filter can cause more than $20K damage. I've seen it more than once. Don't doubt me on this.

I known of a shop foreman, in COsp at Japanese auto. That telling his team about the S.A.I. filter mod. Let's hope more good shops offer it.
As I'm now find they are failing around 150K miles and 15 to 18 years.

Sorry for rambling on. I'm home with Covid and can barely see or walk. Freakin Chine gift to us..

Man thank you. So much knowledge to share. You can ramble on all my post as I want to learn. The my only reason for the block off plates is time and money. I don't have much of either to honest. Imma start the list this weekend and I'll post and keep you up to date. Maybe you should write a manual for classic cruiser repairs or start a channel. Could be great. I'll volunteer my cruiser lol.
Sorry you have covid. Hopefully it's mild. Hydrate hydrate and hydrate. If you have any issues dm and I can recommend therapies for you. Best of luck and thank you again.

Thanks! I

I had a leak on my intake manifold gasket(17171-50020) that was missed in a smoke test and extremely difficult to find. It was giving me like +30 fuel trims

17171-50020 Used in the 98-05 4.7L 2UZ-fe. Is the hard gasket laid on head, for install. We usually don't have issue with, them. Provided proper (PP) procedures used whenever intake manifold R&R.
PP:
New gasket.
White tabs up.
Clean surface
Proper torque technique. Working down in tightening pattern, a little at a time.

1717-50030 Used in 06-07 4.7L 2UZ-fe VVti. Being rubber gaskets, used for VVTi intake manifold (IM). Is very easy to damage, during install. Since we imbed then in IM, rather than laid in place on the heads. One little bump on hard metal, like the engine hoist hooks or studds. While placing the IM, back on heads. They get busted/split. To reduce risk of damaging the rubber gasket. I bend, engine hooks outward a little, to give a little more room. If, I think, I did bump a gasket. I'll pull IM back out, check for any split in rubber gasket.

So today I got the exhaust leaks fixed and once they were done with that they brought the truck around to show me and we were going to clear the codes upon clearing the codes this is what popped up so what do you think I need to do or go from here

So go back to post #10, and the link I posted there.

If your S.A.I. pump has not been replaced. Then there's 98% chance the filter is no longer in position. That it has been out of position, for some time. This little filter missing, can result in a lot of damage. The BK1S1 DTC pending. Is a the LH forward A/F sensor (not actually 02 in VVTi). Which if I recall, you stated 4 new OEM 02 sensors replaced.

If you brought to me. I'd first check a few things.
  1. Look over engine and exhaust.
  2. Check for vacuum leaks
  3. Borescope S.A.I. pump, for filter.
  4. Compression test. I be getting look at spark plugs at same time.
  5. Scope cylinders.

Art, how are you doing? Have you been able to make any more progress? We should go have a beer and talk cruisers.
