Help Mounting PS Reservoir Up High Under FJ40 Hood

My PS reservoir in Tencha it's around 140°F as max I've seen after the piston and new pump .. in my Marilu with 315 and a cooler ( factory pump ) around 120°F

...I think the pump can be below the cooler - it's the reservoir that needs to be above the cooler from what I understand...

From what I understand, the problem is this:

If everything remains ideal, then yes, once the system is bled, it will work fine. It will be more difficult to bleed, in this configuration, but I'm sure you can do it.

However, if you suck air into the cooler, and it's a local high point in the flow pattern, then it will stay there at the high point and not float back into the res.

Thanks. Makes sense.

I may have a couple things to aid your quest! See you tomorrow.

I'm w/ you...

Great thread so far.. I just installed the PSC box and 1500 psi pump in my stock p-can and whamo my can pukes fluid @ high rpm...:bang:, so they say I need the reservoir and closed can which arrives tomorrow...will make bracket and mount. Update everything arrived .............

Ran fine last 4 days of wheeling at Chocco. Ran a few 5 rated trails and everthing held up good - up to the point of a few wheel stands. Will still be looking to move the pump to the smog pump vicininity someday soon - with the reservoir tucked behind the headlight bucket like in the good doc's pics.

HighlandCruiser - looks good, pump location is where I wish I could get mine - but you're going to get alot of heat on that reservoir if you're running a v8 - we had several in our group this weekend that were near to boiling the fuel due to so much heat pushing thru the shroud.

You ever gonna replace that pitman arm? Did you put the two bottom bolts in the steering box?

hey...

Glad to hear someone is out wheelin'....:)
Heat won't be an issue I took plenty of precaution,( 20" cooler and 3 gallons of fluid in the system as well I wrapped the lines) lets hope so....
The pitman arm bent that way from passenger side droop on the trail, 20 times through the Rubicon and I can't count Fordyce trips,so I leave it for now, they are built strong. The steering box has 3 bolts and the fourth is interfering w/ the spring hanger and again the strength has proved itself so far....:flipoff2:
I know I kinda robbed your tread, but sometimes I need a break from :wrench::wrench::wrench::wrench::wrench: know what I mean..........

I finally got around to taking a pic...this is how I ended up mounting my reservoir to get it high enough to prevent cavitation on the steep climbs. I was fine for 7 or 8 trips but one trip I found enough steep climbe to cavitate and overheat the pump regularly. Hope it helps............

That type of stuff normally bothers me - but am thinking that it would actually look pretty cool with an aircraft style cover riveted over it - rat rod style - I may look into that. Agree - that at some point it will be a problem - and it'll most likely be at a steep and inconvenient time...

Well...I suppose all I can ask is that you avert your eyes as I drive by with no power steering concerns. I don't really have time to make a functional, utilitarian vehicle pretty....it takes all my time keeping it functional:D

I hear you - mine is currently sitting on the trailer with a busted rear leaf and short side poly axle. Re-injured my lower back loading up a spare MTR (had back surgery twice this Summer), drove 12 hours home - had back surgery again and the girlfriend is keeping a close eye I don't go out and work on it until the back heals this time.... I hate not being able to drive my 40.

As to function over beauty - I don't know why I keep thinking my 40 is pretty - when it's all beat up - but it is pretty damn functional - just a few more little things I keep saying to my budget :D

Get a 60series cannister and mout it on the firewall, in your case with lefthand drive should fit beside your brake booster.

Waaaaaaaaaaay too far away - issue we're discussing is pump starvation when running heavy inclines or vertical obstacles...

There are several better examples a few posts back - where the pump is located lower and the reservoir is above - or above and ahead of the pump.

I like that air filter canister - nice.

Just a word of advice. The PSC fitting isn't really attached to the reservoir all that securely. If your reservoir isn't mounted to the engine like your pump obviously is, be sure that there is plenty of flex in the hose. Otherwise, carnage will happen at the worst possible time. JB Weld and a little bailing wire got me off of Impossible, and through the weekend.
