what i found is that the lj70 is 13 feet long about the same size as jeep wrangler tj.... how much longer is a 73\74........i truly thought they where ll about the same size.... i know the size difference between the long wheel base ones...

I think the 73/74 series are about 6"-8" longer than a 70, judging by the space between the door and rear wheel well. IIRC I measured my BJ73 and it was ~104" wheelbase. My LJ78 was about 107".

So the LJ78 is about as long as the 1st gen 4Runner or s Jeep Wrangler LJ unlimited...

By hard top, do you mean a permanent welded roof or a removable hard top?

Have a look at this site to get better acquainted with models and body shapes.

I hope this doesn't seem harsh or unkind, but I reckon you need to take a step back and actually work out what you want, and, take some time to research the many and various iterations of the #J7# series before you go any further.

The first cruiser I went to look at was a HJ47 that the seller told me was in excellent condition, no rust etc etc and I was on the verge of sending my life savings (I was 16 at the time) to this bloke without even looking at the truck.

I decided that I should go and look at it before buying, and when I turned up, the thing was his fishing truck, had reasonably advanced surface rust all over the chassis and starting in the floorpans, firewall and so-on. There was bog in the body in the typical 40 series rust spots, touched up with a very poorly matched paint. The knuckles leaked enough to coat the inside of the front wheels and tyres with oil, he couldn't tell me exactly the last time it was serviced, steering gear was on the way to being unservicable...you get the gist.

My take on the moral of the story is, don't let your want for a Land Cruiser take over your senses. I was young, knew I wanted a HJ47 and had some idea what a good one looked like, but not much else than that. So, after this incident I decided I should go home and work out the ins and outs of what I was looking at, so next time, it was a more educated decision.

Hopefully this is of relevance

The 73/74 is ~11.5 inches longer than the 70/71. It's all in the wheel base.

You can get a HZJ73 now ,even better

I thought the bidding was up to nearly $20k yesterday, now its back to under $15K. Whats happening?

I don't know.. he just said that a hard top was able to be gotten? Did the 86 not come with one?

The LJ/RJ70 was available in a soft top or steel roof ,there is no fibre glass top that will fit it. If he is sending you pics of 73/74 series FRP top ,then he knows little about the model variations.
There might be some pics of FRP tops on LJ70 on the net but these are either cut down 73/74 series tops or aftermarket types briefly available in Australia but now out of production.

This is the steel roofed version called a Bundeera in Australia.

Don't want to high jack a post...just looking for help. I have a 2L-T in my LJ70, and just accidently purchased a 2L-TII from Japan. Am I SOL, or can I make this work? Will the 2LTII injection pump work without all the sensors plugged in? or will the 2LTII accept the injection pump from my 2L-T? any help most appreciated.

These posts go better in the diesel section

Well, most LJ70s are diesels.. and most diesel guys hate 2L-Ts. I'm between a rock and hard place. Just re-hashing an old post, since I couldn't find a good place for it.
